    New Egyptian recruit- Oosunaarashi

Thanks a lot for the immediate answer, Asashosakari! Well, I do hope he manages it then, at the moment it seems to me that he should be in makushita, and there we'll be able to see what his actual current level is.

    Happy Birthday, Pandaazuma!

    All the best!

    New Egyptian recruit- Oosunaarashi

He seems to be handling Sandanme opposition quite well so far. I have a question for the more experienced members, though: From a Sd75 ranking, it would probably be impossible that even a 7-0 yusho would see him to Makushita, right?
  4. ... and Tochinowaka's decline to punching bag status seems unstoppable :-( . I really, really wonder what's wrong with the guy, I can't believe its all "lack of mental strength".

My actual worry is that he might continue when he shouldn't because of the talk about his kyujo in May and the withdrawals of Baruto and (especially) heyamate Kotoshogiku...

Even assuming the whole "NSK is pulling the strings on all matches" theory has validity, I seriously doubt that three Mongolian Yokozuna in a row is in any way a goal towards which the NSK has reasons to work for.
  7. I believe there is no rule regarding "mediocrity", not even one for being abysmaly bad. AFAIK if the heya doesn't object, a rikishi can put off retirement as long as he wishes.

He managed to steal back the Sacred Mawashi of Power that Tochinowaka had stolen from him a few basho ago.

He should have used Gagamaru to get the job done properly :-)

And not mention that based on his personal history of comments, if the Ozeki plus Hakuho ever "live up to his standards", he'll start criticizing the lower sanyaku for getting pummeled in the process...

You can read more in this thread about Mr Tsuruta's views on Ozeki and their rank. Although I would assume even if something like that ever got implemented, they would include going kyujo under a different rule. Not that anyone listens to what Tsuruta says, anyway.

He is an oddity, and like all oddities he provides welcome diversity and entertainment, so people like him. I think he deserves it too, since the effort he puts in is spectacular sometimes. Of course, if by some miracle he were to begin rising up the banzuke, we'd be seeing much more of the "henkas are disrespectful" attitude from the crowd. Then again, Aran is HUGE and he's still there despite all the henkas...

    Daikihou and the salt

Someone should tell him not to take it too bad, there's worse
  16. Well, since I was referring to popularity and acceptance by the Japanese public, I think Asa is definitely out of contention. Takamiyama was well before my time, so I will not insist when it comes to comparing his popularity to Musashimaru's.

With 2 loses on record in day 3, and that malfunctioning knee, his chances of a KK start to look slim. I guess he probably should go kyujo to avoid aggravating his injury. Unless of course his fellow Ozeki are planning a rescue mission for week 2...

Still a bit early to call, but Kisenosato looks in good shape, maybe in good enough shape to spoil Harumafuji's chances for a party before he even reaches Hakuho... Of course, this is Kisenosato we are talking about, always capable of shining one day and falling on his face the next one :-)
  19. Now THAT would be an interesting development. Musashimaru was arguably the most popular non-Japanese rikishi, so I would think his inheriting one of the "desirable" names (in the "all kabu are equal but some are more equal than others" sense) would be just another way to show just how much he has been adopted by the Japanese crowd.
  20. switching = buying? Musashimaru has missed a few chances to buy a share as I recall... Maybe he isn't really interested in owning one? I was also under the impression that the Oshima share was "in reserve" for Kyokutenho, even if he doesn't yet own it.

Hello everyone, Been a lurker to the forum for ages, and decided that its about time I joined. I am from Greece, have been watching sumo for 3 years now, and owe a deep debt of gratitude to this forum for teaching me more than half of what I know about the sport! Thanks to everyone

    2012 Nagoya - Kimarite Statistics

So the gyoji is responsible for calling the winner, but the shinpan are the ones that have to stop the fight? Is that true even in cases of throws and when a rikishi flies completely off the dohyo? Sorry for the newbie question, but I want to make sure I understand this correctly...
