    Guess Kisenosato's Aite (Tokitenku) - July 2013

Let me preface this by saying this is not meant to be anything negative against Hoshihitomi (or Jejima for that matter). But something we ‘ve never discussed before – what is the proper etiquette when someone either 1) lists an aite who’s been fought earlier in the basho or 2) lists an aite who’s a heya mate of the chosen one? This happens more than most of us would think – I’ve counted 13 such errors in the past 3 years. The most common one has been the selection of Goeido as Myogiryu’s aite. I’ve been fortunate enough to avoid such a pick, but was within seconds of selecting Takayasu back in the days when we were guessing Kisenosato’s aite. Only a pause before posting to wonder why no one else had selected such an “obvious” pick saved me. Probably most would initially say that informing the poster of the errors of their ways would be the polite thing to do. But this is a competition. What if Jejima’s revised pick of Kotooshu turns out to be correct today, and he goes on to finish in a 4-way tie for yusho and wins with the tiebreaker. Would one say he won the yusho fairly, or would the runner-ups have a legitimate gripe? Isn't selecting an ineligible aite a worse pick than an incorrect but eligible one? Should one be given a special priviledge in those cases? I don't know. But I remember the one croquet contest I ever attended where one of the players was about to hit the wrong color ball. I almost spoke up to point out the error, but noticed that none of the other 15-20 spectators there were saying anything, and surely a few must have noticed the same thing I did. After the match I found out from the players that indeed I did the right thing. So there are probably 3 ways we can go with this: Immediately inform the misinformed one of their error either by e-mail or post Wait 2 or 3 days to see if they persist in the errors of their ways and then inform them Keep our mouths shut and let them figure it out I could make arguments for each of these 3 possibilities. I think my strongest preference would probably be for the second one, with the hope it doesn’t become a yusho decider. But perhaps we should at least have some kind of general agreement on the proper etiquette for these types of occurrences. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.......you have brought up some good points to consider (and no negatvity taken on my part). Good food for thought on what the proper etiquette should be.....
