Haru 1943 had 3 undefeated yokozuna after day 12. And the final scores of all 4 yokozuna were amazing too: 15-0, 14-1, 13-2 and 12-3 (+ kyujo on day 15!)

And the following basho they went 15-0, 13-2, 14-1 and 11-4. Stunning!

Given the events of the last few days, the following is a cold stone lock for tomorrow's bout: a Hakuho henka.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Immediately followed by his intai announcement

Out of curiosity, can a Yokozuna be forced to retire if they keep missing basho? I know that the powers that be can reprimand or recommend retiring, but if Hakuho or Kakuryu want to sit out three or more basho, could they theoretically do that with out being forced out of sumo?

Takanohana and Kisenosato missed or didn’t complete multiple tournaments in a row (albeit after injuries) before they were “recommended” to retire

The key to look for is the "frame".  It is a joint that can bend one way (the way the knee usually bends) and not in the perpendicular direction.  Ligament damage and reinjury usually involves getting a blow to the side of the knee.  He seems to have frames on both knees.

I had a meniscus operation on 1 knee and use the very same bandages while playing basketball. It allows me to perform at 90% of my “normal” capacity without risking further injury. Even with 2 bad knees, a former “near-yokozuna”’Terunofuji at 90% explains his last yusho.
