Promotion/Demotion and Yusho discussion Hatsu 2021
Koorifuu replied to Asashosakari's topic in Honbasho Talk
It also stings to see Ura going up 5 slots after a 10-5, but indeed - there's little else to do. -
That was a double punishment: for Goeido, Toyonoshima & Miyabiyama, but especially for the whole of juryo - who proceeded to get helplessly pummeled for those 15 days. Those three guys got 35 wins out of 39, if we exclude their bouts against each other.

Completely off-topic here, but perennial makushita Nogami has been mopping the floor with jonidan rikishi after a lengthy injury. I'm ashamed I don't know its particular name, but you know when (on a sansho-less bout) a rikishi does that slash with his right arm after a win? He can't bend his knees long enough for that. This doesn't bode well for his future, sumo or not.

I've seen him torment Shodai alongside a few others when the current ozeki was a low maegashira. Since then, it's always felt to me that Shodai's rise wouldn't have been possible in a different era.

It'd only have been more Mitakeumi-like if he bulldozed an ozeki BEFORE looking terribly lost against a joijin, and not the other way around.

東白龍 王鵬 Maybe together they'll get to 44 yusho. -

I'm old enough to remember when getting 5 wins on a joi position was impressive. -
That one bout with Tochiozan, with a brace of random neko-damashi & harite combos that ended with the absolute polar opposite of hinkaku: one of the biggest bully smirks I've ever seen while condescendingly slapping his aite's chest.

Is the YDC working together with Japan's Ministry of Justice to absolutely prevent Kakuryu from getting those citizenship papers, or what?

Non-K-November basho 2020 Discussion (spoiler space)

Ex-Bushuyama survives to stay as Kasugayama-oyakata for another couple of months. -
I'm honestly afraid that the rest of his career will be plagued by that, just as Endo's and Jokoryu's are. Yago is another guy who's in the same boat, and I slightly suspect Yutakayama too.

Non-K-November basho 2020 Discussion (spoiler space)

I can't possibly be the only one who subconsciously assumed for a split-second that Tobizaru's win over Takakeisho was a kinboshi, before thinking straight about it? Somehow it had that feel. -
You got me curious and I checked - Osunaarashi's losses were all against sekitori & eventual sekitori. In fact, up until his debilitating injury coming into 2017 - he had only lost to *one* rikishi who topped out at Juryo. Dewahayate. I had a bit of a twilight zone moment as I saw Rikishin there and, quite frankly, I have no idea who he is. Probably the only sekitori of the last 5 years that wouldn't ring a bell to me, as I tend to follow juryo pretty closely as well. Weird.

Tobizaru must've been working puroresu style, because I just don't see any other reason why he'd headcharge into Terunofuji's mawashi. -

I remember that one very well. Also might've phrased my previous comment poorly, but I did really mean to say that he was at least as good as his peers above him in the ranks. Except prime Hakuho, of course. -

Mitakeumi will self-sabotage himself out of ozeki runs, no yokozuna or five yokozuna notwithstanding. The quality of the people around him does not make a huge difference in his results, because he's got that same quality - he just doesn't show it regularly enough as Yamanashi said. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't really want to become an ozeki himself - he seems like a chill lad who'd rather not have the exposure nor the responsibility. -
First of all, I'd like to thank you for the amazing work in SumoDB, it's an amazing website! I wanted to point out, though, that the "Highlight Foreigners" toggle is not applying to Shishi.

It's almost as impressive that all of these followed that juryo zensho up with double digit wins on makuuchi, which was the top division debut for everyone except for TNS. EDIT The query function's "Highest Rank" trigger does not function as well as intended, but that 14-1 list is also impressive. 19 out of 26 made it to sanyaku, including plenty of O/Y.

Are they paying Daishoho extra for all his gatekeeping work?

I'd add Ikioi to the list. Dropped out of maegashira, but there's no way he's coming back. -

Wakanosato comes to mind. Starting in Kyushu 2000 and up to Aki 2005, he was only out of junior sanyaku twice - making it back with a KK from M1 both times. -

Terutsuyoshi's matta was a good 6 on the Hoshikaze scale. -

I have no doubt that Enho's problem lately is purely down to a massive clamp down he's had on his tachiai postures. There's been plenty more matta on his bouts than before since halfway through July's basho so there's his tachiai unpredictability gone. Not sure why they've started doing it though - have they had enough of the novelty? -
Regarding his banzuke pathway for the upcoming year, would you say Chiyonokuni's troubled 2019 serves as a good yardstick? 3 basho out from M12, which is realistic for Abi in 2 months, resulted in a makushita 46 slot.

This IS the July 2020 Basho thread!! Spoilers!!
Koorifuu replied to Kintamayama's topic in Honbasho Talk
Five people have been promoted to ozeki after a 8-7 in the middle of two 10+ showings, but: - All of them were already lower sanyaku on the first basho. - For the only relevant three, both those 10+ basho were either J or Y.
