Your impression is 100% correct. The Yokozuna worshipers, however, saw nothing. Did you see Harumafuji's face-palm on Takayasu long after the match was over? May we see the numbers, please? In what direction and to what magnitude have incidents changed over the years? Hey... When I said I was under an impression it was meant to imply I didn't go check any kind of stat or number. Just that after watching dozens of bouts in the past week, I feel that I've seen that much more than I'm used to. It wasn't meant to be a swipe at the yokozuna though, even if both are pushing the boundaries there are many more people doing it. A peek at my profile picture will show why I'm not particularly happy at Harumafuji. But other than both Harumafuji and Hakuho making a point of hopping towards their fallen opponents, I recall at least Tokushoryu's on a fallen Kotoyuki, and Terunofuji's on Daido. And I'm pretty sure there's been a number more on the sekitori divisions.

Is my impression wrong, or are we witnessing many more after-bout shoves than usual?

Rikishi Status Kyushu '13 - Final

If Kotoyuki indeed comes back after 2-3 months, don't expect his career to prosper for too long. Knees are already too much of a soft spot for rikishi as it is, let alone rushing the healing of a very serious injury on them. Ruptured tendons on the knees will never be the same again as they develop naturally over your growth. Letting them heal to the finest they can get without any trouble is crucial.

My 2 cents I'd like to share: Seriously, I know many of you are itched by Tokitenku's regular henkas and kicks. But it's simply pitiful to watch his injured self getting gently escorted off the dohyo day after day. I miss the excitement from trying to guess if he'd pull an unorthodox unelegant move or if he'd take an opponent by surprise by doing regular sumo. And I guess even haters would agree that was better. I've grown to like Kisenosato. He ticked me off when he was consistently doing tachi-ai games that at times even involved deliberate mattas followed by a totally needless shove - even to a yokozuna, nonetheless. However when he found himself charging at thin air on the place Hakuho was supposed to be, he seemed to have learned his lesson and gradually calmed down. He seems a much more honorable and stronger rikishi than before. And I highly respect how he actually learned from that schooling rather than get even more pissed. Both Boody and Posterboy are running into a wall face-first but injuries in both cases don't help. On Osunaarashi's case he even did it literally against Gagamaru. Some of you have posted that here and I totally agree. He was way beyond himself when he tried to force out 200kgs of blubber head-on. And times are really dire at Sadogatake. I doubt they take any pleasure with Kotoyuki stablishing himself as a serious maegashira stalwart when at sanyaku it's what it is.

Rise and Decline of the Caucasians

You seriously believe that Japanese people are staying away from the honbasho because there aren't enough European and American rikishi?!(Not to mention that there's no "negative trend". It's stable at a low level.) Exactly. Isn't the only hope of ozumo gaining popularity more competitive japanese rikishi? That's what we're usually made to believe, but judging from the way Osunaarashi and Takanoyama are cheered on because they stand out, I'd say the current Japanese crowds are way more westernized than before and the dwindling in popularity wouldn't be solved necessarily with more Japanese yusho contenders.

Rise and Decline of the Caucasians

I highly appreciate the work put into the topic and I definitely can see where you're going with it. There's a massive decline on European / Caucasian (and I mean the geographical way of being from Caucasus like Georgia or Ossetia, not racial) and only Aoiyama appears to stand out otherwise. However I agree on that "Caucasian" was a poor choice for a term... Not all are geographically Caucasian (there are east Europeans and Kazakhs in there), and not all are racially Caucasian (Orora and Kazafuzan look Asian-ish). So you can apply neither. I'm not even going to poke on the racism debate though.

    Aran talking retirement? Yes. Retired.

I do. Whenever he jumps into an onsen I assume it's a damn pretty big splash.

Rikishi addressing each other - how?

Those I find on Facebook always use their real names there. So I'd assume they only use their shikona on a purely business way.

    Consecutive Basho at Sekiwake (Goeido)

Honestly I see a depletion on ozeki ranks coming sooner than Goeido's form waning. I expect it to be a matter of time until the competition gets softer and he can finally notch up those 32/33 wins.

    Round-robin with swiss pairings.

Nor it would make sense. By day 5 / 6 an undefeated yokozuna / ozeki would be facing an undefeated low ranker. It'd be completely different from what we're used to watch, the top guns brawling each other unless something extraordinary comes from below.

Oiwato just got henka'ed 3 days in a row. It sort of annoys me. The man spent so much time being the tsukebito of Japan's finest elbow dismantler and still hit maegashira while over 30 years old after being freed from the role, he deserved more respect.
