  1. Having watched just the NHK feed on day 13, I thought that Hakuho had won, and thought the tori-naoshi was somewhat strange.

But after reviewing the day 13 pics, it is (as Hakuho said) as plain as a child could see that the top/side of Hakuho's feet touched first... and only the dead body rule possibly saved him.

If anything, the judges were charitable to Hakuho, and it is indeed unfortunate that he would criticize them for a decision in his favor.

  2. Doitsu, Exactly my point. I did not say that the schedle was wrongly done in the last few days. I said he got lucky with the schedule because of the then situation from days 10 onwards.

From another perspective, there is no denying that he got the easiest schedule out of the lower megashira yushos we have seen.

  3. I feel that tenho got really lucky with the schedule and really did not deserve the yusho. He met only 2 sanyak or above, and no joi-jin megashira. The other lower megashira yushos at least had more top ranked bouts. For example the last lower megashira yusho by Takatoriki, he met 5 sanyaku.

  4. He actually lasted a lot longer than I supposed he would by at least 2 years. It was painful at times to watch him get up after falling (and also that infamous Asashoryu leg attack)

Anyway, best of luck to him.

  5. Are these data based on longest maku stay without ever getting any sansho or does it take into the account also of the longest streak without sansho?

i.e, I am thinking of a situation where a rikishi stays in Maku for a long time, but finally gets a sansho after x tournaments. Obviously, I would exclude the ozekis and yokozunas from this list since they don't even qualify for getting one.

  6. Yeah, it seems I am also from those 95%...

I just a little disagree with the green house question... How would you call a house made of green bricks then..? :-)

i think this question was phrased wrongly. after the pre-amble, it should be, 'what is a greenhouse made from?' (not a 'green house' which could be made from green bricks / wood / plastic etc).

Definitely. The questions should have said "greenhouse" (one word) rather than "green house" (two words).

  7. Just as purely an aside, is there any way to get oneself removed from the wall of flame, and what are those criteria. Seems to me that the first 2 candidates on the wall may qualify as coming off the wall now that they are performing relativley well for at least one basho.

By the way, I really appreciate the "how they got there" recaps you gave at the start of each thread.

  8. This latest batch of Ozeki are really a bunch of under-achiever, or is this due to the tightening of the promotion rules?

I think perhaps it is no accident that of this latest batch, 3 had 3 or more yushos behind them (Chiyotakai, Kaio, Tochiazuma). Since modern times, prior to this, only 1 ozeki ended their career with 3 or more yushos. That person is Konishiki, who could have been promoted too under the looser rule in place before Futahaguro. So it if say that these 3 should have been promoted (at least under the old rules), that would make 5 out of 10 ozekis promoted, then they are not so under-achieving after all.
