    Special sumo wiki?

As one of the "handful" of WikiProject Sumo members, it is disappointing to see our efforts belittled in this way. We don't spend all our time updating results (a hour or two every two months? Hardly "oodles of time", and anyway would you rather they were just left out-of-date?) I've been doing a great deal of writing over the last few months. We have articles on every active rikishi with makuuchi experience and many past rikishi (including all the yokozuna). They not just there because "nobody important" has seen them. No one Wikipedia editor is more important than another. Articles aren't deleted because of a lack of sources either. But yes, there aren't many of us at the moment and it would be great if the members of this forum who have so much knowledge of sumo would come over and contribute.

Ichihara - In makuuchi for Hatsu '08 or not ?

Let's hope he has a more successful career than Daikiko/Terunoumi did! Through juryo in one basho, then one 5-10 at Maegashira 15 and that's his only makuuchi basho. Ouch.

Day 14 results and day 15 pairings

Could get sekiwake if Aminishiki fails to win his eighth.

U tube may close down soon

My opinion: because it's a positive end if you quit before the wheels come off His opinion: I have no clue Never happens. Show me a few examples of retiring on a positive end, I beg you. Even Tochiazuma doesn't count. Akebono, retired after his final yusho unless much mistaken. But we all know how that ended up. So I say KaioU retires like all respectable yokozuna and dai-ozeki do: on a brink (or just after) an embarrassing MK. Akebono retired after missing his last basho because of knee problems - that was the official statement at least IIRC. Yes, but his last appearance in the ring was as a yusho winner. That's good enough for me!

    Data Stream Kyushu 07

What the hell is going on? I can only see the crowd going home as well. Aaagh!!!

    Takamisakari kyujo/demotion debate

(Brain whurs) Will 3 wins at M8 be enough to keep him in the division? Could he get away with a M16 next time?

    Video of Musoyama vs. Chiyo?

I remember the bout well. "They're going to need ropes around the ring" said the Eurosport commentator. I've never seen anything like it.

How will Baruto do in Kyushu?

What a great picture! Just sums Hakurozan up, doesn't it?
  9. Such as Futatsuryu, for example!
  10. Futatsuryu. Not a spectacular career by any stretch of the imagination. 29 basho in makuuchi, was komusubi for just one tournament. http://sumodb.sumogames.com/Rikishi.aspx?r=4081

When Channel 4 showed sumo in the UK in the 80s they gave all the rikishi nicknames. Most of them were I think made up by the production team but I think a few originated in Japan, such as "the Wolf" (Chiyonofuji), "the Giant Panda" (Onokuni) and "the Polar Bear" (Hokutenyu). Do any of the current rikishi have nicknames? Apart from Robocop, of course...

I think he's deluding himself to be honest. He needs to have surgery to cure his knee once and for all, then recuperate fully and just start over again. He's young enough. But he won't, of course.

    Featured rikishi - Chiyotenzan

Well he managed a 5-2 in Nagoya. Maybe he can get back to makushita. But it's a sad decline really.

    Sumo Reference Updates

I notice Takamiyama's record is incomplete. I have all his scores if anyone's interested.

Welcome to the forum ryafuji (Neener, neener...) Chuck in your salt (On the banzuke...) and join the fray. A lot of English sumo fans came from those Channel four shows including me. Shame they didn't keep the shows going. I know, they were great. Still have a lot of them on video but I'm kicking myself for taping over the first two series! How could I?!

Hi, I'm a sumo fan from London and this is my first post! I got into sumo in 1987 when it was shown on Channel 4 television, and i was a big fan of Chiyonofuji, Sakahoko and Tochinowaka. Eurosport saw me through the 1990s and now I follow things on the internet. My favourite rikishi today are Kaio, Kotomitsuki and Homasho. I admit to having a soft spot for Otsukasa too. 36 years old and he kepps on coming back to makuuchi...

    The next Gaijin sekitori?

Just did a quick check on Sumo Reference and it looks like he took part in Nagoya, getting a 2-1 score in Maezumo. But it does seem extraordinary that until then he hadn't completed a tournament since January 2005!
