Hanakaze as 1st rikishi in his 50s in ages

I remember this exact question came up with Kaio Presumably he would. It’s across the board for all Kyokai personnel isn’t it?

    Too much weight ?

@Chanko Thief I appreciate your enthusiasm but... this thread was started 18 years ago. Have you read the Sumo Forum Rules? Under "Strongly discouraged actions" it says: 3. Resurrecting old threads If you wish to continue discussing a subject whose thread has withered several months ago, create a new topic and post the link to the old topic in your opening post. There are some obvious exceptions (threads in Sumo Information subforum), but when in doubt start a new thread.

    Ex-Kakureizan dead

The "forgotten man" of the three Fukuzono brothers - he was promoted to juryo simultaneously with Sakahoko but never made it higher than Juryo 2 while his younger brothers went onto makuuchi fame and fortune - he suffered a shoulder injury that held him back. He was Kakureizan as a sekitori but finished his career as Tsurunofuji.

    Banzuke for Natsu(?) 2020

Sokokurai's retirement was announced March 26 - it would be surreal if he was still listed as a rikishi in July.
  5. Youngest person in Japan to die of Covid 19 I believe.

    General Corona Banter

Nice to see Colbert pick up on Kintamayama’s “farting and grunting” line!

    Banzuke for Natsu(?) 2020

@Yubinhaad, you reported back in October that Kotoshoho had changed the given name in his shikona from Toshiki to Yoshinari - is that still the case? Sumo Reference has it only for Kyushu, with him switching back to Toshiki after that tournament.

    Another Sekitori Marriage

His second marriage? There’s a wife and son mentioned by you back at the time of his retirement ceremony in 2013.
  12. Chris Gould says in his video today that Toyonoshima was making payments towards acquiring the Nishikijima kabu when it became available following his heyamate Shimotori being kicked out of sumo in 2011, but that he had to stop, presumably because of loss of salary when he fell to makushita, and that's how Asasekiryu was able to pick it up.

    Corona and sumo

It should go without saying that I was referring specifically to the suspension of tournaments, not a “virus spread among rikishi.” It’s quite possible that Natsu would have been cancelled even if there had been no confirmed cases among rikishi. Of course I hope that they take all the isolation measures necessary to make sure that it doesn’t spread outside this one heya.

    Corona and sumo

I know Takayasu and Tochinoshin have been mentioned as some who would benefit from no sumo for a while but I inmediately thought of Tomokaze. He’s due to drop into makushita when the new banzuke comes out - now instead of dropping like a stone through the rest of the unpaid ranks he might be able to fully heal and have a shot at returning to juryo fairly quickly.

    Corona and sumo

If the state of emergency is only until May 6, then delaying Natsu looks sensible - will give them time to work out the logistics if they do decide to proceed. I wonder if they could do behind closed doors but exclude all the media and have as few Kyokai personnel there as possible.

    Asahifuji kanreki dohyo-iri

Well only up to a point with Taiho - it was a restricted one for him as his stroke meant he couldn’t perform a full kanreki.
  17. Does anyone know when the Arashio transfer was officially done? It was reported on March 26th but ex-Oyutaka didn't turn 65 until the 29th. Also is the old Arashio staying as a consultant in some way or has he left completely? (the English version of the Kyokai site has not been updated yet.)

    New ozeki Asanoyama

Yeah, he's hard to recognize there. Odd.

    Retirees after Haru 2020

Well the "magic number" is sometimes less than that - see the Hochiyama rule.
  20. There's Tamanoumi, who as a makushita rikishi was kicked out for drunkenly fighting on an overseas tour in 1941 and then drafted into the Japanese army. He was allowed back after nine years out and eventually became a sekiwake and Kataonami Oyakata.

    New ozeki Asanoyama

Part-time. He could devote as much or as little time to it as he wishes.

    Haru 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

What, stuff like statistical facts? It was 28 wins. And like today, there was only one ozeki when he was promoted, so it’s certainly an apt comparison.

    Of course not.

Promotion/Demotion and Yusho discussion Haru 2020

I disagree, I’m sure they think having only one ozeki is highly unsatisfactory and they will be very keen to promote another as soon as possible. That’s why the 33 wins standard is loosened when there are fewer ozeki.

    Haru 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

I’ve lost count of the number of times Kakuryu has been written off around here.
