    Wakaichiro has retired

I guess he saw no hope of making sekitori one day? I hope the experience was valuable for him, that he does well in the future.

    When does sumo end

A chanko restaurant in New York?
  3. Just use caution when flinging it after a yokozuna defeat. Which is understandable, because the zabuton they supply are basically the thickness of cardboard.

    Goeido to Retire

Well, that's another thing. I don't remember much discussion about the OBSC being outright yaocho. Wasn't it always presumed to be more like a kind of tacit understanding among participants?

    Goeido to Retire

I was also noticing there seemed to be much less back-scratching going on. I don't know if it's that they don't care to do it so much that the current ozeki seem much more vulnerable to injury. Kaio or Kotooshu or Chiyotaikai might have been able to avoid kadoban or demotion with a favor or two, but for the most part the new guard's losing records come with a pretty serious collapse, and a favor or two from a fellow ozeki won't save them anymore. Looking over the past year or two, the only time it might have helped was Tochinoshin's 7-8 score in Osaka last year, when one win would have saved him his rank, and both Takayasu and Goeido could have well afforded to give it to him. In all other cases it would have been either futile, or other ozeki couldn't spare the loss.

    Enho - predictions?

I have to say I'm a little puzzled by those insisting Enho's opponents will "figure him out" at some point. He's very far from a one-trick pony. If anything, it's Enho who will figure out approaches against opponents where he's been unsuccessful. He's extraordinarily adaptable, and is perfectly willing to meet a tachi-ai full on if it's the right approach for his specific fight.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Grumpy complaints, obvious observations, useless maunderings. The usual.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

I bet Hakuho will even suffer multiple losses -- as many as two or three! -- in one of his yusho tournaments. Clearly, well past his prime. Might as well take him out back of the barn.

    Looking for a comic/manga illustrator

If you have a DeviantArt account, try either the Jobs or Projects forums. Jobs will be for paid word; Projects would be if you're looking for a collaborator. There are lots of great artists there comfortable with the style you're looking for. You might even be able to find someone just by looking around the posted art.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

I cheered Enho's amazing ashitori as loudly as anyone at that moment, but I have to wonder just what's going on with the gyoji's ass in this picture? That's quite a bit more badonkadonk going on than I expect from these guys.

Promotion/Demotion and Yusho discussion Hatsu 2020

I've been keeping an eye on Midorifuji for a couple of years now, and I hope he can get one more win to ensure a good juryo spot for March. He's a smaller rikishi -- the last weight for him in the sumodb is from his debut in 2016 unfortunately, and I'm sure he's added at least a few kilos since then, but he's not huge and has probably benefited greatly from Harumafuji's instruction.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'd seen it in other banzuke listings, but maybe that's where there actually were no ozeki, resulting in two YO.

    Hatsu 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Are we so sure that "At least 2 ozeki at all times" is in fact a hard-and-fast rule? But retirements for either Hakuho or Kakuryu by March are extremely unlikely. They will be ranked YO should there be NO ozeki, but I'm not so sure a sole ozeki must perforce have an opposite. Or is this banzuke incorrect? http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Banzuke.aspx?b=198105&heya=-1&shusshin=-1

    News about Fukurou

I'd been mostly away from the site for a couple of months with my own problems, when the present kyujo thread title tipped me off something was wrong. What a horrible shock.

    Takakeisho injury update

Yeah, well beating deshi with a stick until they bled used to be the way it has always been done too. They're progressive enough to institute instant replays in judging well before many other, more modern sports, but choose to be conservative about the dumbest things. But there's no changing anything short of a public outcry, I'm afraid.

    YDC comments Aki 2019

What a weird metric, to judge absolute strength by relative performance. You know you'd see the exact same thing if they were all strong, right?

    Banzuke for Aki 2019

I've had my eye on Midorifuji ever since I saw him at keiko during my trip to watch the May 2017 basho, and I'm so glad that his hard work has come so close to paying off! Hope to see him in Juryo for November.

    Latest kabu-babu changes

The database ("Sumo Reference" link on the forum's main page) has a list of kabu listing current occupants and owners. Kotoshogiku owns Hidenoyama, currently in use by Tenkaiho. I don't think anyone else on your list has a kabu, but they may have loaners lined up if they want to stay in the Kyokai. There does seem to be a vacant one available if anyone can grab it (Yamashina) but I don't know the politics of that one.

    Meiji era sumo on film

You see that in a lot of sumo from around then, including what appear to be official basho. The entire dohyo was less well-packed. I suspect the change came with the construction of the first Kokugikan, moving competition indoors. The dust raised by fighting on a soft dirt surface would have become intolerable in short order.

    Natsu basho 2019 discussions [SPOILERS]

His skill is not the issue. It pretty much never is with older rikishi.

    Ryogoku Area/Hotel Information

I think it may be based on the type of room. I got one of their standard single rooms and none of them were non-smoking. Perhaps other types of rooms have non-smoking available.

    Ryogoku Area/Hotel Information

I stayed at the Ryogoku View when I was there for the May basho a couple of years ago, and would recommend it. Here's my review on Google Maps: https://goo.gl/maps/5QacxvdRj9Z59C3j7
