    Wajima passes.

That is "Demon-kakka", a metal band leader who is also a great and very knowledgeable sumo enthusiast and sometime commentator. I don't think he ever appears in public out of character, so yes, he's quite a sight in the commentary booth.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Hanakaze manages an actual bona fide KK every second or third basho. Compared to Hattorizakura, he's yokozuna material. Compared to Hattorizakura, so am I, so it's a pretty low bar.
  3. He still has a chance for a return to makuuchi too, as Kyushu should find him still near the top of Juryo. I hope he makes it!
  4. What was the deal with the gyoji wearing the kimono with script letter Ds all over it? I assumed it was a donor's trademark or something, but I couldn't track it down.
  5. TE WO TSUITE!! TE WO TSUITE! Te wo tsuite. Te... wo... tsui... te...
  6. He can't be any worse than the 40th.

    Takanohana resigns

Or they realized their blunder and are looking for any straw to grasp to salvage the situation.

John Gunning has tweeted out the same.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

I would pay good money to see Gagamaru attempt to run a marathon.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

He won every bout. How is that not "zensho worthy"? Are we now imposing some condition for a "true zensho" other than a mere zensho?

    Sansho for Aki 2018

Ryuden and Takakeisho were nominated but not elected, would be another way to put it.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

In the legendary first sumo bout fought by Nomi no Sukune vs. Taima no Kehaya in the autumn of the Suinin era year 7, Nomi won by kicking his opponent to death.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Kyokudozan was apparently known for this -- before my time, but I have to imagine folks who were following sumo during his career must know all about him. When I played this video on YouTube, a brief program covering his "Top 10" harite came up in the suggestions. The guy was brutal with it.

Aurora breaks the record and Aki weigh-in

He may have realized that, given his struggle to so much as mount the dohyo at this point, that to get any heavier would render him fully immobile. I just hope his intai doesn't lead to more weight gain due to less physical activity.

    There's an algorithm?

Aurora breaks the record and Aki weigh-in

He is almost certainly not telling the truth here. Not that he's lying; he's probably fooling himself. Many people at that weight are in denial about how much they take in, even when their intake is carefully tracked and they can be shown for a fact they eat more than they think. It's true that hormonal problems can affect metabolic rate, but if such disorders are rare then for them to be this severe is even rarer.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

I don't know about that. Hakuho made a couple of fake-out moves himself that looked designed to draw out a matta. I think he was trying to confuse Takayasu on purpose.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Hakuho completely dominated the mental game, and Takayasu didn't have the slightest idea what to expect. A straightforward tachiai was the last thing he was looking for at that point.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Unless there's some truth to what I've heard, and that his inconsistent performance is due to occasional severe back pain. The theory is that when he's free from pain he wins like he's ozeki material at least, but when he's not he's in danger of losing to just about anyone. I can't recall who I heard this from -- it was in stream chat a couple of basho ago -- so I have no idea how true it is, but it's at least a plausible explanation. In that case, losing some of the weight is still key, since too much weight can exacerbate back pain.

Aurora breaks the record and Aki weigh-in

It's long past time for the oyakata (more likely the okamisan) to intervene here. Orora is killing himself.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Every time, Endo swung his arm down and moved forward forward as if he were touching down and starting off, but missed the ground by inches.
