Aurora breaks the record and Aki weigh-in

I was going to say, that was when Hakuho was 75 kg lighter. Then checked and Orora was about 110 kg lighter then.

"Set a course for adventure, Your mind on a new romance" Bonus points if you're old enough to get this joke. (BTW, we need a singing emoji...)

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

    Hakuho-Tochinoshin for Day 12 should be a barn-burner!

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

I was thinking the same thing... Calling it Nodo-whoops or something like that...
  5. "They don’t have to go far to find comfortable clothing, either. Several shops in the Ryogoku area carry sizes all the way up to 8XL." That explains why I assisted in getting Yamamotoyama some t-shirts. He required 14XL...

    Sekitori Leaderboard Aki Basho 2018

For sumo in the 70s, very few, if any, touched the dohyo at the tachi-ai.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

Kisenosato and mental fortitude. A name and condition you don't see together in a positive way very often.
  8. One of the last few from the era when I started watching in the mid to late 70s. I remember seeing him in the KK a few years ago and couldn't recall his kabu. I smiled and greeted him as Onishiki-zeki. He laughed as he continued walking.
  9. You keep referencing Ooh-La-La and you'll get a promotion to "our Supreme @John Gunning"

    Sekitori Torikumi Aki Basho 2018

It's probably fairly common but I've never really noticed before: None of the 3 Yokozuna have ever lost to their Day 4 opponent.

    Aki Basho 2018 Discussion [SPOILERS]

He'll be rocking the black/gray one for the next year or so...

    Maybe he'll take Washuyama.....

Preparations of the Y/O- Aki 2018

I was wondering if Tochinoshin was going to get a ride from across the street.

    Trivia bits

Just a note to this: Kaiketsu's 1977 run to Ozeki coincided with Wakamisugi's (Y- Wakanohana II) own Ozeki run as they were promoted at the same time.

    Greetings From Hampshire

Me too. In fact, I lived there from the ages of 2-4.

    Banzuke for Nagoya 2018

Takayasu was on the east side because there were four Yokozuna at that time (Harumafuji was still active). With three at Yok and three at Ozeki, The 3rd Yok gets the east side and the 3rd Ozeki gets the west side.
  19. Just for identification purposes, I'm pretty sure that is the late Yokozuna Takanosato (ex-Naruto Oyakata) in the Twitter vid. Couldn't tell who was receiving the tough love.

You are correct (it Y1E was a typo) Fixed.

Foreign Rikishi and Japanese Language Skills

Which has always amazed me. Especially the proper use of idioms/humor/sarcasm, which, from what I understand, is especially difficult for non-native speakers to master. I'm envious of those that have the dedication/discipline to learn another language. On a semi-related note, I know how to order a beer and ask for directions to the nearest toilet (usually in that order) in quite a few languages. (<-- I have my priorities...)

    Tochinoshin Ozeki Promotion News

Agreed. And to answer the inevitable question: Kisenosato will hold the Y2e slot. Placing Tochi in the O2w slot balances the East and West sides of the banzuke.

Preparations of the Y/O- May 2018

He's just letting Nojo get a little confidence.

    Doreen Simmons' Passing

Her along with Andy Adams and all the others that had a part in Sumo World 40+ years ago helped introduce and educate me on the world of sumo when I was that little boy pictured to the left. I remember in 2007 when I saw her in the kokugikan being too star-struck to say hi to her. She will truly be missed.
