Who said that Hokuseiho did it “in cold blood, for enjoyment”.

Get what they deserve, good riddance?, oh please. Do you really think Abi and Asanoyama are the only once who “bravely” sneaked out. Or do you think Hokuseiho is who invented all this abuse? These guys are just the once who were got caught in a media cycle. I don’t understand this whole gettin on high horse, are you people just opened your eyes. I feel sorry especially for Asanoyama who had such a talent and momentum. It is like looking at beautiful bird with clipped wings right now. And btw “Sustained physical assault and psychological abuse” is a definition of sumo.

What you wrote there is your wishful thinking. I am quite convinced that harassing and beating at different degrees and for different reasons still continues in almost all of the stables as I write. It is part of sumo and that is why this comes up again and again. I am not defending Hokuseiho here, nor any other bully out there.

I have read and watched so many interviews of former Mongolian sumotori, being beaten and harassed by their mates, crying everyday. Is crying everyday is normal, Isn’t it the way of sumo?

:). No offense taken, we ourselves tend to shorten the names of our friends and relatives. So for example Terunofuji whose name is Gantulga would be called by his peers as Ganaa, or Hakuho Davaajargal simply Davaa or even as Dagi. Of course strangers would call them by their full names. But there is also an exception. For very revered person it is common to shorten their names to one initial syllable followed by the designation. For example, there was a famous historian and linguist called Rinchin, who is still very much revered among Mongols. So if I were to mention him and show my respect I would call him Ri Bagsh, meaning Ri Teacher. Hakuho’s father whose name is Moenkbat called by Mongols non other then Moe Avarga, Moe Champion. So Hosh totally fine with me as well as Hak and Kak. May be some day Hakuho would be called by some of us as Da Avarga.

Yes that is the assumption , no need to rehash the obvious. But did you actually see the loose mavashi? I for one would like to see the pics of Kirishimas back knot before the stoppage. If I remember correctly this same Inosuke let Tobizaru wrestle with complete undone knot and loose to the armpits mavashi. As far as grip goes, watch that bout again, Midorifuji’s hand was clearly on mavashi and not on top of the knot. Let alone around the mavashi knot.

So which is it. Does he hate or doesn’t like to be called Mongolian. Hate is a strong word. I don’t buy that. His father is Mongolian, his name is Mongolian, he was recruited from Mongolia. The reason he is in sumo is because of Mongolian connection. Most mongols regard Tuvans as mongols for cultural and historic reasons, notwithstanding their Turkic language. So there. PS: I can’t find the interview, but I remember Roga telling in that interview how he is trying to learn Mongolian.

It was very weird interruption to the bout. Was the mavashi loose to be begin with and why Midorifuji was given more deeper grip? In Mongolian wrestling there was a short lived rule according to which, if wrestlers were taking too long, one of them would be given a grip around the waist. It was cancelled because it gave too much advantage. After that grip given to Midorifuji ozeki had no chance.

Recently, I watched an hour long Kiribayama’s interview from February in a Mongolian TV. He gives a lots of credit to Kakuryu. When he was in upper Juryo, he recalls, Yokozuna joined the heya, and he just started to “kill” him. Always picking him up as training partner and doing butsukari “for his own sakes”.But he appreciates it now and admits he wouldn’t be where he is now without those sessions. Also interestingly, as a kid he most admired Harumafuji for his speed. Overall judging by this interview, he seems to be an open person, very humble, emotional, has lots of respect for his Master previous Michinoku, a mothers son.

Some time ago in one of the threads there was an inquiry about a Mongolian language of Sokokurai, and whether he could be understood by Mongolians to the north. Today I saw a trailer for an upcoming interview in a wrestling themed show of the Mongolian broadcaster TV9, where he speaks for lengthy time in Mongolian. Hakuho retirement complete, long live Magaki oyakata! A splendid danpatsushiki, although not so sure about Mongolian anthem in the ceremony, him being a Japanese citizen and all. I hope people didn’t read to much into it. It took one kiss from Ama for otherwise stoic Hakuho to get his tears flowing. I wonder why Asa wasn’t there. In Mongolian sources no one seems to know, I can’t imagine Hakuho wouldn’t invite him. Oh well.

His Mongolian is totally understandable by Mongolians from Mongolia. In fact, he is inviting to event “Manai Mongolchuudaa” meaning “Our Mongols” referring to all of us in north and south. In general the majority of the South Mongolian dialects differ from Halh Mongolian only in pronunciation of few letters/sounds and is quite easy to understand by Mongolians in Mongolia. As far as I know even some of the Inner Mongolian state TVs and Radios broadcast in Halh Mongolian dialect. There are few exceptions though like dialects of Harchin and Horchin Mongols who historically lived longer close to Han Chinese and spoken fluently is rather hard to understand by the rest of us.

Usuhbayar Demidjamts. According to some Facebook post he is a son of a yet another Mongolian Grand Champion Usuhbayar Gelegjamts. If it is true he comes from very famous wrestling family. His grand grand father “Buur” Jamyan is also a Grand Champion from 1920th. Nicknamed “Buur”, which is male camel, for his tall stature. Picture of his father and Grand-grand father. The times are changing. I used to call Hakuho the “vanilla” yokozuna, it seems nowadays he is the main villain lol. As much as I wanted Teru to win and Hakuho “hand” him the reigns, the determination to win after all these 44 championships is very impressive. Congrats to Hakuho on his 45th.

I for one completely understand their desire to preserve the sumo traditions as pure as possible. What I don't understand is scapegoating the foreign-born rikishis for all the ills of the sport and at the same time allowing them to enter the sumo. If becoming a "true" Japanese is only possible by being born there, a logical or consistent thing to do here is to ban foreigners from sumo. Problem solved.

I would like to join the chorus of well wishers. I should admit that his ascension to the rank of yokozuna was a big surprise for me back then. But as the saying goes in Mongolian wrestling, rank begets power, so he did. I look forward for his oyakata carrier. 4th Mongolian oyakata if I am not wrong, who would have thought. Well done Anand.
