    Haru 2020 Basho Discussion (SPOILERS)

Good Nakabi Day, I'm interested in opinions on the psychological/mental aspects of this fan-less basho: Which rikishi seem to be missing the crowd the most? Some rikishi (Asashoryu was the master) feed off the crowd and without it this basho, their performance/gusto may be down a notch. Enho? Endo? Which rikishi seem to be doing better without the crowd? I would tend to lean towards the most introverted of the group. Kakuryu? Aoiyama? Has the lack of crowd in the front rows taken away the element of precaution that might creep into to the rikishi's psyche/brain during a match? Note the Yutakayama-Daieisho match as an example. I've noticed, there is no worry about crashing into fans. Does the lack of front row fans prevent injuries? Does it allow rikishi to go all out more since the worry of collision or bracing a fall is eliminated? Day-to-day, are the rikishi preparing for bouts differently? Do they take this basho as serious as other bashos? Or might it seem more like a practice or exhibition event? Any other differences in performance in a fan vs non-fan environment?

TORCHBEARER 2020: the picks, torch match notices, results

From the bottom of the banzuke, the TORCH started here: Start of 2020 Rikishi: TAIGA Start-of-2020 Rank: JONOKUCHI 28 EAST I didn’t have much faith with Taiga being the first TORCHBEARER of the year. Although he was once ranked as “high” as Sandanme 86, he 1) had been banzuke-gai TWICE; 2) had not won since Nagoya 2018; 3) since Aki 2018 had a record of 0 wins, 6 losses, and 30 absences. Then Hatsu 2020 started and when day 12 rolled around and Taiga was 0-0-6 and I suspected he may go banzuke-gai again OR intai….coronavirus was not involved. But there he was on Day 13 for our first TORCH match facing last year’s first TORCHBEARER: RIKISHI TAIGA vs HATTORIZAKURA RANK JONOKUCHI 28 EAST vs JONOKUCHI 27 WEST Player(s) up for points: Mutsu’ohideki’s rikishi pick is HATTORIZAKURA a loss = 1 point, but a win = 3 points and an opportunity for more points in the next torch match And Taiga won. So we ended where we started. End-of-Hatsu Rikishi: TAIGA End-of-Hatsu Rank: JONOKUCHI 28 EAST standings: 1 point Mutsu’odeki no points for the 99 others. === === === === === And now the new banzuke is out: Start-of-Haru Rikishi: TAIGA Start-of-Haru Rank: JONOKUCHI 18 WEST === === === === === Some commentary: We have been here before ~ starting Haru still in Jonokuchi…no panic. If a basho is cancelled or suspended midway through, the TORCHBEARER simply keeps the TORCH until their next match when wrestling resumes. In this game, the TORCH does not always reach the paid ranks. The lowest final TORCH position was Makushita 58 East [the tally is 6 Makushita finishes, with 2 years never touching Juryo]. As long as the TORCH is still around in November, there will be a winner. Results change, but the game rules don’t change. IF IF IF and only IF for some reason the TORCHBEARER goes intai before November with the TORCH, there is a backup plan. I’ll post IF IF IF an only IF that ever happens. Good Luck

  15. good day all, The 2019 prize is getting packaged to send to our champion Yoohoo. It's time for the once-a-year invite to the easiest picking (guessing) sumo game ever. No need for daily picks, no need for pre-basho picks; just a pair of picks will last a whole year! Here's how it works. The symbolic TORCH starts with the last rikishi and last rank on the 2020 HATSU BANZUKE (rikishi/rank at the bottom of jonokuchi). If the rikishi wins his bout (called a TORCH MATCH), he keeps the TORCH. If he loses, the TORCH is passed to the winner. Through the year, the TORCH will eventually make way up the banzuke as it is always passed to the winner. The object of the game is to pick the one rank and one rikishi you think will end up with the most points throughout the year's six bashos. Points are awarded to every rikishi and rank involved in a TORCH MATCH; and to players who finish closest to the FINAL TORCH position at the end of the year. FINAL TORCH POINTS AT THE END OF THE 2019 KYUSHU BASHO: 25 points if you picked the final TORCH holding rikishi. 25 points if you picked the final TORCH holding rank. PLUS... 10 points to the player(s) closest to the final TORCH holding rikishi. 10 points to the player(s) closest to the final TORCH holding rank. 9 points to the 2nd closest picks. 8 points to the 3rd closest picks. 7 points to the 4th closest picks. 6 points to the 5th closest picks. 5 points to the 6th closest picks. 4 points to the 7th closest picks. 3 points to the 8th closest picks. 2 points to the 9th closest picks. 1 point to the 10th closest picks. (so if my math is correct, a minimum of 110 points (55 rank/55 rikishi) are guaranteed to be handed out at the end of the year) TORCH MATCH POINTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR: 3 points for every TORCH MATCH your chosen rikishi wins. 3 points for every TORCH MATCH your chosen rank wins. 1 point for every TORCH MATCH your chosen rikishi loses. 1 point for every TORCH MATCH match your chosen rank loses. The player with the most points at the end of the year will get a prize. For historical reference, here's where the torch ended up in previous years: 2006, J2w 2007, Ms33w (highest position J7w) 2008, J7e (highest position J6w) 2009, J5e (highest position J3e) 2010, Ms58e (highest position J3e) 2011, J6e (highest position J4w) 2012, J2e (highest position J1e) 2013, Ms48e (highest position Ms4e) 2014, Ms49e (highest position Ms3e) 2015, J6w (highest position J1w) 2016, J11e (highest position J6e) 2017, Ms10w (highest position J13w) 2018, Ms8e (highest position J2e) 2019, J7e (highest position J4e) Highest number of points: 59 by Profomisakari in 2009. To play, please submit: 1) the rikishi you think will get the most points between now and the end of the 2019 Kyushu Basho. and 2) the rank you think will get the most points between now and the end of the 2019 Kyushu Basho. The deadline for entries is one minute before the first TORCH MATCH starts... JST. Send new entries or updated entries to shimodahito(at)yahoo.com, by message on the forum, or post on this sumo forum thread. For players who miss the deadline, your 2019 picks will carry over to TORCHBEARER 2020 (as long as your rikishi pick is still active). A "wildcard" drone pick, by default will be the lowest rikishi and rank on the HATSU BANZUKE and cannot be selected by any other player. Good luck! The game is painless...one rank pick, one rikishi pick... no daily picks needed…. And a prize. Ten+ years and still going! -shimodahito

TORCHBEARER 2020: invitation, rules, and your picks

Thanks for the heads up. We monitor his status.... we've had first TORCH matches start as late as halfway through the basho. If he stays out permanently, we backtrack and start the TORCH contest from the next lowest banzuke rank/rikishi. Also, as arranged before his passing..... Kofuji-ICAN's rikishi pick is Ryuden (his highest ranking adapted rikishi). Kofuji-ICAN's rank pick is Sandanme 44 East (the average of all his active adapted rikishi's ranks). For every point he scores, a donation is made to the international cancer advocacy network (ICAN). For those curious, his adopted rikishi were always: rikishi with “kifuji” or “kofuji” in their shikona -- (Tsubakifuji, Nishikifuji); and any rikishi from "Kofu-shi" in Yamanashi-ken -- (Ryuden, Shobushi).

TORCHBEARER 2020: invitation, rules, and your picks

The wildcard (last rikishi/rank on the Hatsu banzuke) this year is Jonokuchi 28 East Taiga. Players are not allowed to pick the wildcard rikishi or rank, which so far hasn't happened with the 2020 entries. And for some good news. Since Jk28E Taiga is not scheduled for Day 1, there's no TORCH match. Therefore, the deadline for new entries and updates is extended. Entrees will be accepted until the first TORCH match begins. With a couple more new entries, we may break 100 active players this year. good luck!
