So, here is the zip file containing all the missing basho from the Meiji era: from 1909.01 back to 1868.11. When I saw names like Kimenzan or Shiranui, I took it as a sign that this is enough for now.

The archive includes one file (combined_output.txt) with every match, and individual files for each basho. I tried to sanitize the data in every possible way (though it’s still possible I missed something).

    Total:
    - 81 basho
    - 16665 matches

@Doitsuyama - I can provide you with a google sheet containing every match privately. Of course, I don’t expect you to process it anytime soon, but if you eventually decide to take a look, please feel free to contact me. I’ll try to help if you run into any issues with this data.

    meiji_matches.zip

That file is easily imported to a sheet, thanks. Processing it will need a while, but I will import it to the DB.

I can provide more data if I commit myself to it - though it will take some time. Do you have a preferred format that would make it easier for you to process?

Well, Excel or a Google sheet with one match per row would be best. Or just text here of course with lines like

    190601 1 Hitachiyama Tamatsubaki W

and so on (only once per match, not from both rikishi's perspectives), that's easy enough to import in Excel.

But what do you mean with "more data"? Are there more basho available like this?

I recently came across pictures that appear to be results and makuuchi matches from the 1906 Haru basho - link to the gallery.
Unfortunately, the full image has terrible resolution, and the detailed image is not complete. But I guess it's better than nothing.

I'm not a fan of adding isolated stuff to the DB as you can see in the stats: https://sumodb.sumogames.de/Basho.aspx

It's a lot of work, especially when more stuff gets added later. If we can find continuous stuff of several basho in that time frame, that would be fine to add I think.

I love the new search feature that gives the rikishi id page directly now for a unique shikona, so far it was a search link and I had to open a result page in it to get to the id link

That's in place for a fairly long time by now..

Many thanks for the new features! I'd like to raise an objection about the new ordering of the query fields though, in particular that it's now impossible to tab from wins directly to losses. (The order is Rank, Year, Wins, Age, Month, Losses, which frankly makes no sense at all.)

Wouldn't it be better to have them arranged like this? This would also be a much smaller departure from how it was before and require no un-learning of ingrained navigating habits.

    1 Rank    4 Year
    2 Wins    5 Month
    3 Losses  6 Age

Alternatively, if the new visual layout is to stay (I can see reasons for that), the tabbing behaviour really should be changed to the following if possible:

    1 Rank    2 Age
    3 Year    4 Month
    5 Wins    6 Losses

Lastly, while we're in feature requesting mode, I'd love to see the addition of Losses as a queryable field in the bout query.

The new visual layout stays and I adjusted the tab order now. I want to add an age option for both rikishi in the bout query, so I guess I can change the layout here a bit as well and add a losses option for both rikishi.

  6. This is the first time ever that four maegashira lead the yusho race after day 13 with 10 or more wins. The closest contender was ... Hatsu 2025 when only Ozeki Hoshoryu crashed the party with 10 wins (and actually won the 12-3 yusho and yokozuna promotion).

Oh, and it's tied for the now 8-way lead with most maegashira at 10 or more wins after day 13.

    Not pretty.

It was perfect for me, thanks a lot. I added these heights and weights to the database. If you happen to have data like this for Natsu in the years 2014 to 2024 (except 2021) feel free to post it here as well.

In other cases, doing the same style of search, a number is produced but the number is wrong.

    Is this a known issue?

This is fixed now, the mistake was calculating highest division and highest ranknumber separately like earlier noted. Regarding your second example I'd like to point out that Sd15 for the fourth Daio is correct since the higher rank of Ms56 was with a different shikona.

I hate to insist, but just in case I'll doublecheck: Is it intentional in today's changes (thanks!) that Hirotsugu# was left as the reading of 浩嗣 for the 1976.11 to 1984.03 period? And looking at it again, I suspect that Hiroshi# for 1984.05 to career end was most likely Kōji as well, as a kanji-only change.

Not intentional at all, just an oversight. I changed them to Koji now.

Not really a bug report at this stage, more a note to self and maybe others for further investigation: Today I stumbled upon a match in 1944 that ostensibly had Takasago-beya rikishi on both sides of the dohyo, which made me check if there are further cases in the DB. There are, quite a few in fact. I would guess that most (all?) of them are a matter of incomplete heya histories that obscure that two rikishi actually weren't in the same heya at the time of their torikumi, but that's going to require research into each case. For now, all heya for which the bout query turned up results other than playoff matches:

Dewanoumi - various sekitori matches from 1909 to 1940, then two lower division matches in 1966 and 1968 (with a common rikishi)
Futagoyama - three matches in 1982 with a common rikishi, two more in 1992 and 1994
Irumagawa - one match in 1913
Isegahama - one match in 1992
Isenoumi - three matches in 1968 and 1970, all with a common rikishi (Nagasawa = Kiyozakura)
Kitanoumi - one match in 1989
Kokonoe - one match in 1970, another in 1994
Kumegawa - one match in 1937
Minezaki - three matches in 1910 to 1912 with a common rikishi
Takasago - 15 matches with a common rikishi from 1925 to 1934, 8 more with another one from 1944 to 1947
Tatsunami - 14 matches from 1924 to 1928, all with a single common rikishi

Not sure what's going to be easier to investigate, the questionable sekitori matches of old or the more recent cases in the lower divisions.

(And last not least, one case that we know to be true and real: Asahiyama - a maezumo match in 2019, noted as a screw-up as it happened.)

I looked at all these cases and could clear up most of them, for rikishi who reached makuuchi the japanese wikipedia has a heya history, but sometimes with unclear time of the change - here the kabu history in sumo reference often was very helpful, leaving only a few debatable cases where I assumed the time of the heya change. Some lower division cases I could solve because they were obviously part of a bigger heya move and it's clear from the shikona convention which of the two involved rikishi moved. There still are some cases left where I have no clue, four with a single bout (Isegahama, Kitanoumi, Kokonoe and Kumegawa), the remaining case in Dewanoumi with two bouts and the Isenoumi case with one common rikishi in 3 bouts.

    Is this of any use?

(There may be other missing banzuke in there, but let's start with the one.)

The banzuke itself is not that great to read indeed. I guess I could add the missing banzuke down to M4, just need a good bit of time to write all this down.

There's something odd with some of the very oldest banzukes in the database (accuracy aside). The plain banzuke view seems to have an error which causes no navigation arrow to be provided for years in which only one basho is listed. However, one of the two intended arrows does appear for Fuyu 1761 - and the issue does not affect 1946 at all, despite it also having only one basho.

    1759.png

The navigation arrow is missing when the banzuke is not known for the basho in question. In your screenshot for example there should be a banzuke for 1761 Haru but I don't have it (and maybe noone has it anymore), so there is a broken link by design. You still can navigate with the drop down selection.

Is it intentional that the query doesn't pick up makuuchi debuts that happened to be in sanyaku rather than at a maegashira rank? Yokozuna Miyagiyama does not show up in a query for 1927.01 debuts, while the other five rikishi who merged in from Osaka do (plus one "normal" makuuchi debut via promotion from juryo).

(Double-checked with Aioi in 1911.02, the last rikishi to debut as komusubi, so it's not just an isolated matter affecting Miyagiyama alone. No sanyaku-on-debut rikishi show up in general.)

That's a known issue and a database limitation. I have only markers for rank debuts, not division debuts, and the "Makuuchi debut" feature actually uses the maegashira rank debut which is in general ok since not many makuuchi debuts are higher than maegashira...

Should Kuniazuma's english page show when he changed his shikona kanji? Or somehow is this just an error in the japanese page?

No, shikona kanji changes are only shown on the japanese page. The english page only shows changes in readings.
