    Hatsu 2024 discussion (results)

Yes, I might be misjudging it. But I still have the feeling that Churanoumi thought he had it in the bag but didn't finish the job properly, so perhaps he's the one to blame rather than Bushozan. Speaking of this, did you watch Shiden - Shirokuma in juryo? In that case, Shiden *clearly* gives up and Shirokuma squats to put his opponent down - on the tawara, so the bout isn't technically over. Luckily Shiden didn't "restart" the bout, he stepped out shortly after.

    Hatsu 2024 discussion (results)

In the Churanoumi - Bushozan bout, there was a weird sequence where to me it looked like Bushozan thought he was losing and started to ease up Churanoumi sensed that, thought he was winning and then *he* started to ease up on his pushing whereupon Bushozan got back into the bout, side-stepped and eventually won. I don't know, it felt slightly unsportsmanlike by Bushozan.

    Trivia bits

The 10-5 promotions from M3e and M4w seem a little crazy, and resulted in a lot of over-promotions and under-demotions. Still, I wouldn't mind a little more generosity these days, when 10-5 at M2e could get you stuck at M1.

    Kirishima's 2024 - going the next step?

After getting the rope after Hatsu he can afford to go fishing now and then, so I don't think he'll get a 70+ score. Would be cool if he did though.

    Makunouchi Yushos in 2024

    Kirishima (O) 1 Kirishima (Y) 2 Hoshoryu (O) 2 (non-consecutive) K'waka (O) 1 (also non-consecutive)

    Atamifuji - the real deal?

He did much better in Kyushu than I thought, but I think he will get a reality check in the next basho being ranked around M1 for the first time (like others before him). Then we'll see if he can adjust, or if the top-rankers adjust to him. I am on the fence.

    Atamifuji - the real deal?

So, 11-4 and a playoff loss, just like in Aki 2023.
  9. Nice one - I assume you mean Kotonowaka taking this as his shikona after promotion. Could happen!
  10. Kirishima Y Hoshoryu O Kotonowaka O Takakeisho Two yokozuna promotions in the same calendar year would be amazing. Hasn't happened since 1987, I'll stick to one.

Takakeisho in 2024 (we were all young once....)

I am amazed that he won two yusho in 2023, and incredibly he is still among the youngest third of the rikishi in makuuchi. But it doesn't feel like he can evolve his sumo further, and now that others around him are starting to get their act together Takakeisho might find it increasingly hard to win another yusho. Let's give him one J, hanging on to the rank.
  12. He could have a breakout year, but from what we've seen so far it looks like his current limit is elevator rikishi. It's difficult to predict where the elevator stops a year from now, let's say M5. If he reaches the joi he should have ample opportunities to face ozeki and cause one or two upsets.

Tamawashi - his second year as the oldest sekitori

I think he will slowly slide down the banzuke, with 2 KK and 4 MK. He should have enough of a cushion to stay in makuuchi during the year.

He is the Christmas present! (Birthday on 25th Dec)

I hope that he will bounce back a little during 2024, he should have a few more years in him. Not ozeki again but why not komusubi.
  15. Yeah, that's what I thought too.
  16. Daiamami wants another ~ symbol!

    Yokozuna Terunofuji in 2024

(The poll currently says "He will go intai (retire) during 2023") -> should be 2024 I think he will give up 7 kinboshi: Abi, Takayasu, Meisei, Tobizaru, Tamawashi, Atamifuji and Shonannoumi. And he will retire during the year.
  18. Perhaps the esoteric ~ symbol could be used in their case.

    GTB Kyushu 2023 - RESULTS!! 194 entries

The tiebreaker is most correct guesses of the rank, which means that hits > bullseyes. I think that's just as fair.

    Aki 2023 discussion (results)

I am not a Takakeisho fan by any means, but between a rikishi who has fought all his bouts from the top of the division and a maegashira 15, I will almost always root for the former. And I am not upset by the henka, it's part of sumo. Very few believed that Takakeisho would be even the best ozeki this time, not to mention yusho winner. He did what the others failed to do so from me, all respect to him.

Promotion/Demotion and Yūshō Discussion Aki 2023

I think that Kitanowaka should be 2 by the numbers, since 8-7 would nominally mean J1.

    Newer Ozeki Kotonowaka?

I am in the "Kotonowaka will eventually make ozeki" camp, for sure. If he has a breakout basho with a yusho in September, he'll get the nod if it's 13-2 or better. Very unlikely but it's happened before, see e.g. Chiyotaikai.

    Nagoya 2023 discussion (results)

    The right man won it. But we got yet another "weak" makuuchi yusho result, these are shaky times indeed. Decade # basho 12-3Y 11-4Y % "weak" yusho 1950s 42 5 12% 1960s 60 5 8% 1970s 60 7 1 13% 1980s 60 6 10% 1990s 60 7 1 13% 2000s 60 3 5% 2010s 59 5 1 10% 2020s 22 9 41%

    Nagoya 2023 discussion (results)

I am not a torikumi maker, but Hokutofuji gets Nishikigi? Since the yusho line is going to be 12-3 Nishikigi is now out of the running and he is on a losing streak. Surely Kotonowaka would have been a much worthier opponent for Hokutofuji.
