This IS the July 2020 Basho thread!! Spoilers!!

And we are back to a tenor. That's better.

That last yobidashi had a voice pitched a fourth lower than usual. A baritone, no doubt.

This IS the July 2020 Basho thread!! Spoilers!!

It's been discussed quite a lot earlier in the thread. The general consensus seems to be that those 8-7 last basho makes it unlikely (but not impossible) that he will get ozeki with 12-3. Edit: Seiyashi beat me to it (and is more pessimistic about Shodai's chances than I am.)

    Videos July 2020- All days

As I have more time on my hand these days, I sometimes watch both and I appreciate their different styles of presenting the bouts of the day.

That was disappointing... Kudos to Terutsuysoshi though. Gino-sho awaits?

Yes, I kind of dismissed it myself earlier in this thread. But you never know!

Shodai could actually be two bouts from ozeki-hood...

Hmm.. will Terunofuji really get all the way to sanyaku even with 14-1? Edit: no, Tokushoryu didn't so neither will Teru.

Endo could actually get stuck at M1e with 8-7. If Daieisho doesn't win his final bout there will not be an open komusubi slot. And Endo might not even be first in line, if Takanosho wins his last bout.

Yes, and it's a big difference between say 10-5 / 12-3 / 11-4 and 10-5 / 12-3 / 13-2Y. With the first outcome I think they'd rather wait another basho, with the second one I think he would be promoted outright, with no need for desperation.

They all three have to face higher ranked rikishi on day 14 but yes, Teru gets the most difficult opponent. I am just guessing, but could perhaps be because a) Terutsuyoshi had one win more when the torikumi was decided, and b) both Enho and Ryuden (esp. Enho) have had tougher schedules this basho. Enho has faced 9 higher ranked rikishi, Terutsuyoshi has faced 5.

Mitakeumi has M16 Kotoeko tomorrow and then - normally Daieisho I guess, but who knows, perhaps he gets Terunofuji? 10+11 wins in two basho would be a good stepping stone for yet another ozeki attempt, 10+12 would be even better. Shodai can in fact reach 33 wins in three basho if he wins his remaining bouts. Would 13+8+12 starting from M4 be enough? Probably not. If he makes ozeki soon it's more likely to be in Hatsu 2021, with this basho being the first out of three. Terunofuji: can an ozeki run be started from M17? Remains to be seen.

Wakanosato was never close to winning a yusho and never did better than 11-4, so I think Mitakeumi's chances are slightly better. Unless he has passed his peak already of course.

    Promotion/Demotion/Yusho Discussion July 2020

I figured someone would come up with that query. Note: "where everyone in sanyaku stays within their rank"!

    Promotion/Demotion/Yusho Discussion July 2020

It's possible that we will get a situation where everyone in sanyaku stays within their rank and no maegashira is promoted to sanyaku. As far as I could find, this has happened three times in the modern era, the last time being Natsu 1988.

It would indeed and it's *very* unlikely to play out that way.

    Promotion/Demotion/Yusho Discussion July 2020

Not really... The loser will just be one win off the pace on senshuraku so still has a chance of playoff. A 12-3 yusho is still a possibility, so even Kotoeko has an outside yusho chance. One way for this to happen is if Asanoyama, Terunofuji and Hakuho meet each other and win one match each in their internal bouts, and then all three lose their remaining bout.

Is there still a mailing list for RotoSumo, or did it die out sometime 10 years ago or so?

I think I jinxed Takanosho the other day, when he was on a 4-bout winning streak: Since then he has lost three in a row.

Let's not forget Takatoriki though, who was the last man to defeat Chiyonofuji. The yokozuna lost to Takahanada on day 1, so apparently he needed a few extra days of sumo to think things over. On day 3 he lost to Takatoriki and then resigned.

Let's talk about Takanosho! First time in the meat-grinder, has now faced 6 of the 8 ranked above him (only Endo tomorrow and Okinoumi left) and is 5-3. I think he is doing extremely well. Edit: Takakeisho is in the same heya.

Thanks, I figured it might be by elimination. The list of shimpan was mentioned on the stream but I wasn't sure if I missed someone. When I got back to watching sumo again this year after being away from it for a long time, I probably recognized more shimpan than rikishi. Most are quite easy to spot. Ex-Tamanoshima is one of the former rikishi who IMHO looks nothing like his old self, whereas ex-Tochinonada looks the same to me.
