As we have the final standings of the 2024 World Championship, the final Metasumo results can be published and... Sumo Spiffy is the Metasumo champion 2024!!! Well done and hearty congratulations on this great achievement (in just his second year of participation in this game)! Ruziklao is the close behind runner-up and it's his third straight podium appearance indeed after last year's third place and another second place in 2022. The Metasumo deliberation council is impressed by this consistency and mentioned that he should aim for even higher next time... Profomisakari catches the third place leaving Ganzo and Jakusotsu behind. @Sumo Spiffy (848.89) @Ruziklao (837.11) @Profomisakari (788.21) Follow this link to see the full results: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cc--YVziNwTlPo0hJnGAb7HKeOe4Sqn6/view?usp=sharing

Maegashira yusho used to be a near-automatic promotion to sanyaku, so it would have been difficult to amass further wins as maegashira. That left only theoretical runs where the yusho caps off the three tournaments, which in turn would have been difficult because 20+ wins beforehand almost always mean a rank in the joi-jin for the third basho.

Doesn't help that it's so 2018. Surely he's Nish now.

I am hoping Onosato eventually becomes yokozuna, so we can call him Yoko Ono

I mentioned in the current Yokozuna speculation thread about how Kakuyru had not managed another run of tournaments that would have gotten him promoted to Ozeki after his actual promotion, at least up to his Yokozuna run. I'm been thinking about this feat in general for those who are career-high Ozeki, and wondered how often they tended to achieve numbers for an Ozeki promotion again. For the purposes of this, I'm going to count a successful run as being 33/3 with a Yusho counting as an additional win, with at least 10 in the last tournament, and all KKs. There have been some promotions slightly more lenient than this, but I need to draw the line somewhere. In terms of counting them, the runs can overlap such that a string of 4 11-4s would count as two successful runs. With that in mind, the 1-2 tournaments just before being promoted to Ozeki run can be combined with the first 1-2 results as Ozeki to add to the completed promotion run count and similarly the 10 win automatic repromotion can count toward a run. If the rikishi was promoted with a run weaker than my standard, I'll subtract one from their successful run count, and if they were to meet my criteria with all three sanyaku basho and weren't promoted, I will add one. I will not be counting the times that an Ozeki was promoted the normal way twice in their career. I'll be starting with Ozeki that were promoted in 1956 or later, slightly before the 6 basho era, as there were still around the same number of tournaments the couple years before they went all the way to 6 per year. Maybe Ouchiyama and Mitsuneyama deserve to be on here too, but I had to pick a date. I also won't bother listing the current Ozeki. Matsunobori - 0 Kotogahama - non-promotion 1957.05 -> 1957.11 +1 1958.01 -> 1958.07 +2 159.03 -> 1959.07 +1 Total = +4 Wakahaguro - weak promotion run -1 1959.07 -> 1959.11 +1 Net = 0 Kitabayama - weak promotion run -1 1963.05 -> 1963.09 +1 1964.03 -> 1964.09 +2 Net = +2 Tochihikari 1962.03 -> 1962.09 +2 1963.03 -> 1963.07 +1 Total = +3 Yutakayama 1963.05 -> 1963.09 +1 1964.05 -> 1964.11 +2 Total = +3 Kiyokuni - weak promotion run -1 1969.03 -> 1969.07 +1 Net = 0 Maenoyama - 0 Daikirin - 0 Takanohana 1974.11 -> 1975.03 +1 1976.11 -> 1977.05 +2 Total = +3 Daiju - 0 Kaiketsu - weak promotion run -1 1974.11 -> 1975.05 +2 Net +1 Asahikuni - 0 Masuiyama - weak promotion run -1 Kotokaze - weak promotion run -1 1981.07 -> 1982.01 +2 1982.09 -> 1984.01 +7 Net = +8 Wakashimazu 1982.09 -> 1983.01 +1 1983.05 -> 1984.03 +4 1984.03 -> 1984.11 +3 Total = +8 Asashio - 1984.11 -> 1985.05 +2 Hokutenyu - 1985.07 -> 1985.11 +1 Konishiki 1987.05 -> 1987.09 +1 1987.09 -> 1988.01 +1 1989.11 -> 1990.07 +3 1991.03 -> 1992.03 +5 1992.03 -> 1992.07 +1http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=7 Total = +11 Kirishima 1990.09 -> 1991.01 +1 1991.05 -> 1991.09 +1 Total = +2 Takanonami 1993.11 -> 1994.03 +1 1994.03 -> 1995.01 +4 1995.11 -> 1996.07 +3 1997.07 -> 1998.01 +2 Total = +10 Chiyotaikai 2002.05 -> 2002.09 +1 2003.03 -> 2003.07 +1 2003.11 -> 2004.03 +1 Total = +3 Dejima - 1999.05 -> 1999.11 +2 Musoyama - 0 Miyabiyama - 0 - did have another run that qualified, but that was while not an Ozeki, so isn't counted. However, there are also plenty of Ozeki who did it regularly, including some impressive consecutive runs, Kotokaze's being the longest. In ascending order: Goeido - -1 Masuiyama - -1 Shodai - 0 Tochinoshin - 0 Musoyama - 0 Miyabiyama - 0 Asahikuni - 0 Daiju - 0 Maenoyama - 0 Daikirin - 0 Kiyokuni - 0 Wakahaguro - 0 Matsunobori - 0 Mitakeumi - +1 Kirishima(II) - +1 Asanoyama - +1 Takayasu - +1 Kotooshu - +1 Hokutenyu - +1 Kaiketsu - +1 Kitabayama - +2 Asashio - +2 Kirishima - +2 Dejima - +2 Kotomitsuki - +2 Kotoshogiku - +3 Takanohana - +3 Yutakayama - +3 Tochihikari - +3 Chiyotaikai - +3 Kotogahama - +4 Tochizauma - +4 Takakeisho - +4 Baruto - +4 Wakashimazu - +8 Kotokaze - +8 Kaio - +9 Takanonami - +10 Konishiki - +11 Given the vast gap between the last 5 and the rest, there's good argument that those 5 were simply very unlucky to not string a series of good enough results to become Yokozuna, or in Konishiki's case, had to overcome a harder hurdle than most. It also looks to me like the line between +2 and +3 looks like a good place to cut off "good Ozeki" from "not-so-good Ozeki". Certainly you could go further with this sort of analysis, including Yokozuna by both number of Ozeki promotion runs and number of Yokozuna promotion runs that meet some fixed criteria.

Sumo Prediction Game results for Kyushu 2024 are up! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1B_c37D4rSX12ef3-scYxVKw9lxpNW6IjwpjpcDKqs24/edit?usp=sharing Gang, we didn't do so hot this time on a couple of questions. There was a question with only two correct responses(most Ozeki wins in the last 5 days, no one believed in Kotozakura except Eatplaysumo and Namakemono), only Kachikoshi thought that Kirishima would get 0-8 wins, and *NOBODY* predicted that Kotoeiho and Kotoshoho would get a measly 10 wins combined. That might be the first goose egg in Sumo Prediction Game history. @kachikoshi_ won the yusho with 11 correct answers, a full 2 more answers than the Jun-yusho contenders. The average was actually 5.9 wins, which I am going to add 2 to for everyone. This gives the majority of people KKs that participated, but that's fine. Kyujo players get 4 wins.

Literally just subtract wins from losses. So 4-3 is +1, 5-2 is +3, etc. 5-10 is –5. As I said, this may not predict movement within makushita, but seems to predict the exchanges...

2 Nittaidai first years in the best 16 - and kokuspo j. yokozuna Fukuzaki - not many 4th years. Only one useful result for the tsukedashi qualifications: Toyodai's Myanganbayar already has a msTD, Kazuki Sato (Hosei) with another sdTD after the student championships, Goshima and Bukhchuluun have their msTD already from there - but Fukuzaki after 2 sdTD now added a msTD - Yamahibiki-oyakata will be pleased Live results: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zRbJmW3RuKemPNo2vbUPhk9fH5hE20uRmmTHNWEiyiw/edit?pli=1&gid=1843244750#gid=1843244750 As usual, only NHK has a live coverage now earlier parts, with the primary school tournament

Somewhat OT but I laughed (too) hard at this. Maybe I'm the only one here getting thrown when folks save a handful of letters... I get we can infer who's being talked about from context but when I see "Kise" I think "Kise beya" but on this forum it's used almost exclusively referencing Kisenosato. Seems equally strange to be referring to Kotozakura here as "Koto" when that's the prefix of literally an entire heya (and a Tokyo ward housing much sumo history) and a bit like referring to Terunofuji as "Fuji"... but maybe I'm in a minority of one here. But Yoko Ono might be the exception that makes the rule and the true acceptable use case, not only that but it's fully Kintamayaman in nature. Though of course, we've already had a Yoko Bono and I'm not sure I'd want to hear that... ;)

Well, well, well...... not the year that we were expecting for Kirishima! 1. I am fairly sure that he will be ranked at M1 or lower - and even if he were to be ranked at Komusubi (or keep his Sekiwake rank - no chance!), nobody guessed any of those possibilities. So, I guess the closest guesses are the four players who expected him to remain at Ozeki, and not get promoted to Yokozuna. They are Yarimotsu, just_some_guy, Jejima and Shatsume. Edit: Kirishima's rank on the January 2025 banzuke is M1W. 2. Kirishima lost to M8W Gonoyama on day 13 of the November 2024 basho. Two people got this spot on.... just_some_guy and Tigerboy1966. Tsuchinoninjin was one off and WAKATAKE is two off. 3. Kirishima had a total of 43 wins over the year. [(11-4), (5-10), (1-6-8), (8-7), (12-3) and (6-9)]. This number is 11 wins fewer than the lowest guess - so again, we were all way off. I am the Yokozuna came closest with 54. Tsuchinoninjin was next with 55. Ryoshishokunin came third and just_some_guy came fourth. Based on that, the yusho (think roughly 12-3) goes to @just_some_guy and the jun-yusho (10-5ish) goes to @Tsuchinoninjin .

Things have been more flexible in the last two promotions compared to earlier post-Futahaguro ones (not questioning them, just stating facts). But I can’t see a yokozuna promotion without any yusho—maybe two doten, but not a JY and a doten.

I doubt they are going back down the path of "full equivalents". They rejected a lot of respectable Y-JY combinations since 2004 exactly not to make it too easy. I think it will go down to the Kisenosato path: try again until you get at least one Yusho in your run. Several Yokozuna runs have been three basho long runs - for instance Onokuni in 1987 (15-0Y 12-3J 13-2J). I doubt they will ever rush things up especially whether A) Kotozakura gets back-to-back as in your speculation B) Onosato wins the basho and triggers his own run (as per your other expectation). They are badly looking for a Yokozuna, but not for Hoshoryu necessarily.

The lack of replies thus far says it all: a fairly low-key crop. Nobody really raises obvious question marks, as they all look like they've hit their ceiling and there's no public hint of any acrimonious circumstances behind their departures. All the best to everyone.

Now I see Yarimotsu's note that two bouts took place that I had listed as X. Dear Yari-san! First of all, thank you for saving the evaluation. This enabled me to quickly correct the final result and I will attach it here at the end. But this is the help that I need from you for the evaluation as soon as possible. I will now only correct the final result, not all the intermediate results. Anyone who is rated too highly in the intermediate results should be happy. If it is the other way around, I apologize. But please Yarimotsu, help me as soon as possible so that I can avoid such mistakes in time! This is the corrected Final ranking, I hope now errorless: Rk Player Pts TB 1 Gusoyama 14 234 2 shimodahito 12 177 3 Tochinofuji 12 158 4 Andreas21 12 157 5 Athenayama 12 145 6 E9 11 192 7 Kotowazasato 11 180 8 Flohru 11 177 9 Yarimotsu 11 173 10 Fashiriteta 11 157 11 Eatplaysumo 11 149 12 Hakuryuho 11 134 13 Hisui 10 185 14 Profomisakari 10 163 15 Furansumo 10 145 16 Susanoo 10 141 17 Asapedroryu 10 141 18 ChickyStarr 10 138 19 Papayasu 10 136 20 Fujisan 10 135 21 Wamahada 10 127 22 chishafuwaku 10 112 23 Asset 9 112 24 Ippikiōkami 9 106 25 RaeucherLax 9 105 26 Takanorappa 9 100 27 Shatsume 9 99 28 Karasukurai 8 99 29 Bunbukuchagama 8 97 30 Benihana 8 93 31 Fia 7 106 32 Hakuhonofan 7 102 33 Rokudenashi 7 83 34 Jogn 6 87 35 Hidenotora 6 70 36 Mizuma 5 61 Great Congratulation to the winner Gusoyama and the other well placed players! Many thanks to all players for participaon. Yarimotsu many thanks for the hint to the missing bouts, but also to the bout selection. Getting a game 21 bout almost every day is a very good distribution. You probably won't achieve that for every basho. But congratulations on this selection! In Januar we should start a new game 21. You all are invited. But I will be unavailable for a few days. Yarimotsu, can you help? . Profomisaakari

Thank you to all the players for playing and to @Athenayama for the scoring. Sakura looks up and prizes open a long forgotten cupboard. Inside are some dull and dusty trophies. After dusting and getting the silver polish... The yusho trophy goes to @Sumo Spiffy. The kanto-sho goes to @Sumo Spiffy and @Jakusotsu for the highest base points. The shukun-sho goes to @Bunbukuchagama for the highest base points (69) The gino-sho goes to @tsunamiko for highest base points per correct pick (6.75) for those with 'winning records'.
