Shodai is only the third Ozeki to have 1 win by day 9 and the previous two don't count as they were in 1909 and 1915 when the basho was only 10 days. Also, they included kyujo. Shodai is therefore the first ever Ozeki to makekoshi on day 9. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query_bout.aspx?show_form=0&day=9&rank1=O&wins1=1

He has to withdraw. He's nowhere near the yusho race and passes the eye test for injury. Nobody will complain if he gives his body a rest.

Well, that would let the Ozeki crop have a fresh excuse for sucking ("how can you get 12 wins when there's a dominant Yokozuna??" blah, blah).

Story of the tournament for me. Ura is less surprising, but I had Tobizaru and Midorifuji down to get very low numbers. They've each been impressive and shown excellent sumo IQ.

Ochiai graduated in March, remember that he was at the last All Japan as high school student. Sponichi writes that which heya he'll chose and which basho will be a point of media attention from now on - so the rumors here have yet to be proven. He said he wants to enter this year, but he may give the All Japan another try to aim for a ms10TD. o
