Kotonowaka trained at home (where else?) and faced Kotoshouhou and others for some fierce training. reflecting on his year, dropping to Juryo because of an injury and returning: "It was a learning experience. My body is moving well now and if I could be able to be fully prepared for the basho, it would be great.. I think it would be good to be promoted to sanyaku and would like to do sumo that would please my grandfather (RIP ex- Yokozuna Kotozakura and ex-ex Sadogatake)," he said. Kotoshouhou also trained at home today. He is in reach of sanyaku after only three bashos, all with kachikoshi. His two classmates are climbing as well- Houshouryuu is a few blocks behind and Ouhou has finally made it to Juryo. "My classmates are getting close to me, slowly but Shirley. I want to go at it with passion and zeal!" he said.

Asanoyama talked to the press by phone today. "I'm really disappointed I can't visit my home town like I do every year at this time. This is the first time i will be in Tokyo for the New Year.. The heya's training room and dohyo will be open so I want to use the time to upkeep my body while listening to it as best as I can. My right shoulder is fine. I'm able to move it and I feel no uneasiness when I do sumo. As for this year, in January my senpai Tokushouryuu won his yusho and it was a greats stimulus for me. I made it to Ozeki in March and that was one goal attained which made me so very happy, but the last basho did end the year on a sour note.. " he said. "Am I nervous being kadoban? I'll probably be a bit nervous on day one but I'll try not to think about it and face each bout before me on a daily basis," he added. He usually gets to eat his favorite foods from back home this time of the year. "My support group is taking care of me with that and if something is missing I can always ask them to send it to me.. " he said. He hasn't been able to hold a party for his Ozeki promotion due to the circumstances. "I'm aiming for one more rank upwards.. I want next year to be a better year. If I don't get a yusho I have no chance to be promoted to Yokozuna, so that's the number one goal. My first yusho came about unexpectedly but the next one is where I really need to shine.. " he summed.

And now for something completely different: Hand-grip Yokozuna! - by Otowayama and Shiranui (also secretly an Asanoyama fan) 【握力NO.1関取は誰だ!?】握力横綱決定戦 - YouTube The banzuke: Special prizes: Asanoyama (awarded the oyakata's favourite sansho) Tobizaru (funny faces sansho) Broke-the-scale sansho not awarded as the only deserving candidate is ineligible Special mentions: Mitakeumi (missed out on the funny faces sansho) Terunofuji (lost a playoff again) Takanosho (shimpanbu heavily biased in his favour (read: meddling with the scale), actual score 73, would have been K1E instead) P.S. Would be glad if someone could instruct me on how to do table formatting and YT video embedding. I've tried looking at the page source for posts with both of these, and done a few experiments of my own in the testing area, but have drawn a blank each time.

An excellent question. The "young oyakata" guys on the Kyokai videos seem to have a reasonably informal interaction with current Makuuchi wrestlers during their interviews; of course, they are trying to keep things light. Here's what I think about. Hakuho will be an Oyakata someday soon. Meanwhile, almost all kabu holders born after 1970 have met Hakuho on the dohyo; most have been pasted by him multiple times. How does that affect the social interactions between Oyakata and rikishi? Extra note: If we started some sort of viral petition, could we get ex-Futeno to change his personal name so that his shikona would be Inagawa Davida?

Indeed, the fact that I didn't mention Hokkaido (home of many great yokozunas) at the top of my list meant it has dropped quite significantly, as least in the mind of an average viewer like me... In my opinion, the current schedule of rikishi and sekitori is a time machine. It represents the most tenacious (though not necessarily the strongest, the most skilful or successful) of the amasumo scene 5 - 15 years ago. Let's look at some pro-sumo data (you may have to open the image in a new tab). Notes *Based on 2015 census. They do the census every 5 years, and the 2020 version isn't out. **Out of active rikishi still active, but this is a little spotty, see *** note. ***Out of 675, inclusive of maezumo, banzuke-gai. The Hatsu 2021 information hasn't been updated to Sumodb, so the non-sekitori population numbers might vary a bit. However, for the sekitori population the numbers are accurate as retirements (i.e. Kotoshogiku) and promotions (i.e. Oho) have been accounted for. ^Only includes sekitori currently occupying any of the 60 salaried slots as of Hatsu 2021. ^^If the Kyokai doesn't consider Greater Tokyo as Tokyo, I won't either for this exercise. Let the next picture bring special focus on the rikishi, sekitori and promotional success rankings by prefecture. So, you can see that in the case of Tokyo, they are lagging behind in terms of rikishi and sekitori representation relative to their general population but are still #1 rikishi/sekitori contributors. They are also achieving promotional rates proportional to their population, but are only #18 in this respect. Consider a smaller prefecture being disproportionately represented like Ishikawa. They are only #34 in terms of population, but are #24 in rikishi representation, #5 in sekitori representation and #2 in promotional rates (nearly 1 in 3!). Qualitative analysis which cannot be represented in these tables shouldn't be omitted either. Ishikawa has extremely high profile sekitori like Enho and Endo, and notable up-and-comers like Ofukasawa. That of course helps the perception of a powerhouse compared to rikishi of lower profile like those of Mie, for example. Perceptions are important. If I were an oyakata, the best thing would be raising a very successful (>Ozeki) rikishi who is very popular, but the second best thing might be a more modestly achieving but very popular rikishi as it brings new people into the sport. Tottori might seem like it has only Ishiura, but they have also brought up successful rikishi like Ichinojo or up-and-comer Hokuseiho. It's worth noting that Ishiura's father, whom long-time observers will know is the principal and sumo coach for Tottori Johoku, was an Ishikawa native/formerly well-known or established there himself. That's how Enho (Ishikawa) got noticed by the Miyagino group in the first place. The Tottori Johoku trend is also reflected in other powerhouse schools like Saitama Sakae. The prefecture may seem to be underperforming, but extremely successful out-of-town rikishi like Takakeisho (Hyogo) also credit them for his success. With children/uni-students moving prefectures or even countries to train for pro-sumo at an increasing pace, shusshin and identity has become increasingly fluid and complicated. You shouldn't take the rankings chart too literally of course, but I believe rankings always has some entertainment value and could be used to supplement your qualitative observations of the sumo world at large. Bringing it back to my original statement - I do think that for the most part, the banzuke does represent the most tenacious of the amasumo scene 5 - 15 years ago. There are places that are regional powerhouses now, but may/may not be in the future (i.e. Ishikawa) and those that aren't now, but could be in the future (i.e. Tottori). It's all very complicated. I'll might something similar to the amasumo charts after Christmas, but I might not be able to make sense out of it with the limited data about 2020 performances available (due to tournament cancellations).

Asanoyama gets a new kesho mawashi from the Anekurahime shrine near his parents house, where Asanoyama as sekitori each year came to pray on New Year's day. On a dark green background, the Tateyama mountain range in the bright morning sunlight and in front the houou 鳳凰 forcefully flapping its wings. With the ozeki reserved purple tassels and fringe. The kesho mawashi will get a purification ritual on New Year's day, adore the shrine tabernacle till the 4th and then will be delivered to the heya. o http://www.fnn.jp/articles/-/123032

Jokes aside, Takakeisho's unbreakable even-keel mindset is a major reason he's been as successful as he has. The guy's as mentally tough as any rikishi south of Hakuho.

I named it in my first post in this thread. I wouldn't put on top of my preferred but I definitely enjoyed watching it.

Misugisato frequently was featured on programs about the 2nd life of rikishi on TBS http://www.tbs.co.jp/birth-day/onair/20170218.html That year he also was at the Chanko-1 Grand Prix For 11 years now he runs a seitai therapy 整体 place in Tokyo, Nakano with the magnificent ®name Gottsu Hand - Misugisato http://www.misugisato.com/ (derived from the rikishi phrase "gottsan desu", the thanks after having received or devoured something). While active he was was called "Dohyo-edge magician", and before the heya merger also "Waka-Taka killer". After intai he could stay as oyakata for 8 years and wanted to go on, but after a rule change in 2006 he couldn't meet the requirements (to open a heya) and decided to leave the NSK: "What remained was the debt of 10s of millions of yen of the money invested to have a heya." While running a chanko restaurant in Kamakura, he enrolled at a vocational school for seitai therapy, learned it also in main place China, accumulated experience to now have so called "divine" hands. And the well known name contributed much to his success. This year with Corona, the revenue dropped by 60%, but he can't afford to take a day off. http://maidonanews.jp/article/13636398
