Kakuryuu wrapped up his training for 2020. Butsugari, fundamentals and no sumo yet. "At this time, he thinks he wants to enter. There's the injury, and I think he will decide at the last minute, "said his Oyakata Michinoku. "He is not in perfect shape. It's important that his body and mind become as one. His body hasn't 'dropped' . He is hoping to go in the right direction," he summed.

A record? Me? Are you kidding? GTB has been my first game (I still remember being to shy to ask for the link again on the Mailing List back then in 2000.05 and so I started with 200.07 only) and is the only one I am still playing - and will be playing until the end of time, be warned. Not that I would be successful of any kind, not even close to kachi-koshi most times, but the bi-monthly fun of getting mad about the shimpans' decisions what a good banzuke constitues is something that has been a valued part of almost half of my life. So... What's next? I intend to let Leonishiki not pass again, hold Yubinhaad and Takanorappa back, aim for my 200th basho (Natsu 2034, barring any un-basho) and never let happen again what happened in 2015, when I forgot to enter one time. I don't know which made me more mad then - the shimpan or my own ineptness. And putting the spotlight back to the game again: It is absolutely outrageous and monstrous to put only two Komusubi on that banzuke!

Banzuke topics for Hatsu 2021 - Shodai is the 10th ozeki to be kadoban in his second basho as ozeki and the first since Takakeisho in July 2019 - Asanoyama is kadoban for the first time in his ozeki career (after only 3 basho) - Last time we had kadoban ozeki was Takakeisho in July 2020 - Last time two ozeki were kadoban at the same time were Goeido and Tochinoshin in Aki 2019 - Terunofuji returns to sekiwake for the first time since Kyushu 2017, which is 18 basho (Natsu 2020 was cancelled and not counted). This is also his second consecutive basho in sanyaku. Like last basho where he was the first rikishi with sanyaku experience to fall all the way to Jonidan and return to sanyaku, he now can count this accomplishment towards the sekiwake rank as well - Takanosho is ranked at sekiwake and in sanyaku for the second consecutive basho - Mitakeumi is ranked at komusubi for the first time since Natsu 2019, which is 9 basho (Natsu 2020 was cancelled and not counted). This is still his fourth consecutive basho in sanyaku (He previously had a run of 17 basho not long ago) - Midorifuji is the newest Makuuchi debut from Isegahama since Terutsuyoshi in Haru 2019. 5th debut from Shizuoka prefecture post-war and the first since Sagatsukasa in Haru 2010. 11th Makuuchi wrestler from Kinki University and the first since Shimanoumi in Natsu 2019 - Akiseyama returns to the top division for the first time in 28 basho, last time was Haru 2016. This is the 4th slowest return on record in the 6BPY era - Oho makes his long awaited sekitori debut (no thanks to daddy) and is the second sekitori debut from Otake heya since the current Otake oyakata (Dairyu) took over. Oho and Takatoriki are also the 11th set of father-son sekitori wrestlers and the first since Kotonowaka the Younger added him and his father to the list in Nagoya 2019 - Tohakuryu (formerly Shiraishi) is the third sekitori debut from Tamanoi heya since the current oyakata took over. 11th sekitori wrestler from Toyo University and the first since Wakatakakage in Natsu 2018. 5th sandanme tsukedashi wrestler and the first since Kizakiumi in Nagoya 2019 - Oho and Tohakuryu are the 49th and 50th post-war sekitori debutants from Tokyo prefecture - Yago returns to Juryo for the first time since Haru 2020 - Ryuko returns to Juryo for the first time since Nagoya 2019 (8 basho). Since the inception of the 7-0 within Makushita 15 --> Juryo promotion in Nagoya 1977, Ryuko is the second wrestler to gain promotion from the west Makushita 15 rank since Tokitsunada in Aki 1990

Eleven rikishi change their shikona on this banzuke. Those of the two shin-Juryo were announced along with their promotion - in addition, Tohakuryu has changed a kanji in his given name but keeps the reading as Masahito. Kojima was the only Asakayama-beya rikishi not to have the leading kanji of the shisho (former Ozeki Kaio), but that has been put right now as he changes from his family name to Kaigo. The two youngest rikishi in Shibatayama-beya are given their first shikona - Yatabe is now Nishikikuni, the second kanji perhaps a nod to his home city of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi prefecture. Meanwhile, Nagahara gets the same first kanji but with a different reading, he is now Kinseiryu. Besides shin-Juryo Tohakuryu, two more rikishi from Tamanoi-beya get their first shikona. Hashimoto is now Wakaazuma, while Iwamoto gets the more interesting change to Tamanowaka. It's quite rare for a Tamanoi rikishi to get the 玉 kanji, as in modern times it's far more associated with Kataonami-beya, while Tamanoi has preferred to use the 東 kanji from the shisho. From Musashigawa-beya, Higuchi is now Toramusashi, and he also makes a given name change. It was Toranoshin, and although it had a different tora kanji to the one in his new shikona, he has changed it to Terunoshin instead. Kotomanabe has waited over eight years to get his first shikona, he is now Kototaisei, and also makes a given name change. In contrast, Otake-beya's newest rikishi Harada gets a shikona straight away, he is now Tairikuyama. And lastly, Hattorizakura gets a win - if only thanks to the first kanji of his new shikona. The idea seems to be a combination of victory (勝) and the Shonan (湘南) region, which lies along the coast of his home prefecture Kanagawa and encompasses his home city of Chigasaki. Let's hope it inspires him to get a win in 2021. Hi Cal, I’m a professional writer and editor with a number of books to my credit and over a dozen years of experience editing manuscripts of all types across many disciplines. I would be happy to discuss helping you to ghostwrite your memoirs because I find your story fascinating and I am a huge fan of Sumo as both a sport and a culture. Please send me a message if you would like to talk about how I might help you with getting your story out there.

I’ve always been willing to provide free images of any rikishi I’ve shot that may be missing. That’s a long standing offer. Most if not all of the tegata images were mine, as is the main page sidebar one of Shunketsu. Sumo Reference is an incredible resource and one I’ve been more than happy to contribute to whenever possible. Back in the day, with the help of the JSA museum staff (and certain booksellers) I was able to send Doitsuyama several packages stuffed with old results and data. I’m not sure what’s missing or what gaps I can fill but if Doitsuyama or those helping him maintain the site can send me a list I’ll see what what I have.

First time there will have been a Tokiwayama-beya since August 1897 according to Japanese Wikipedia. The oyakata apparently didn't coach any sekitori in 21 years there... meaming Takakeishou, Takanoshou and Takagenji will be the first Tokiwayama sekitori in over 150 years, as the previous iteration of the stable shut down in 1870.
