Doreen was 85 but her passing came as more of a shock than hearing she was hang gliding over active volcanoes would. She was active in many endeavors right up to the end. Doreen was involved in sumo before I was born and yet always had time for me which I appreciated no end. A couple of years ago she gave me her entire collection of Sumo World magazines and some other stuff for free. I’m glad I got to see and congratulate her after she was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun. A true original she will be missed.

Drrring drrring.. Kakuryuu: "Hello, just a moment.. Guys, can you take it down a notch? And don't finish all the sake!! Yes, who is this?" Hakuhou: "Anand, a party without inviting me??" K: "Who is this?" H: "Chiyomaru. It's ten AM and I'm still hungry.." K: "Musashimaru? I can't hear with all this noise.." H: "OK, have your fun-you do realize that I'll be back next basho, right?" K: "Guys!! Don't touch the pork gyoza!! Oh, boss, it's you.. Sorry, with all the partying and music I didn't recognize your voice... "" H: "Oh, but you will recognize my face when we meet, surely.." K: "Who is Shirley?" H: "Really? 'Airplane' jokes now? OK, have your 15 minutes in the sun. You will miss them dearly." K: "Oh boss, don't be like that.. " H: "How are the fingers? Have you thought about taking up finger-painting? Are you serving fish fingers at your party? " K: "Umm, would you like to join us?" H: "Sure, I'll come right over to shake your hand warmly and firmly? Wouldn't that be nice?'" K: "Sorry, bad line.. you're breaking up.." H: "No, I think you will be breaking up soon.. Can't wait for our next bout. Keep your fingers crossed.. Oh, sorry, you can't.." K: "My doctor says I should sit this one out due to my right pectoral sphincter ligament bruise left chest lower back shin dislocated membrane. I tend to agree." H: "OK, then, just a friendly handshake." K: "Could we just make that a friendly milkshake?" H: "No." Click. The rest will be history. . This is a somewhat watered- down version of an invitation to play GTB, the only sumo game played between basho while everyone is still asleep. Rules: Guess the Banzuke. Simple. You get two points for a bulls-eye and one point for just getting the rank right. You get no points for eating healthy. Tiebreakers - Most total guesses, then, we check the banzuke backwards - getting the lower half right will be important. The most correct guesses in the last ten places will win the tiebreaker. If still tied , we go up a ranking at a time like a penalty shootout. Then Tochinoshin becomes Ozeki. It's up to you to check if you are on the list of entries. It's going to be your fault if you don't notice that your entry went missing in the Internet void. No late entries will be expected or accepted. NEW!!! The Awesome GTB Helper, conceived by Tsuchinoninjin - makes making an entry a piece of cake!! Special thanks to Andoreasu who runs it, Doitsuyama who automates and maintains it and to Chiyomaru who makes the world go round.

I'm not sure that such news would be a shock for a force like Doreen. I never met her personally, but we chatted from time to time online. I know she was just being polite, but I felt honored when she offered, out of the blue, to take me visiting some of the heya the "next time" I was in Tokyo. A person on the ML reports: Here's a link to her church's announcements page RIP Doreen

Their scouts have done a very good job, gradually building up to their dominance that we see now. The one that I use is the Japan Sumo Federation's website, which has comprehensive results of most of the main tournaments. The college sumo Uwajima tournament is this weekend, so that would be our first chance to see who has gone where.

There will be a full Anglican funeral service at St. Alban's on Saturday, April 28th, at 1.30 PM. A memorial service is also planned for a date yet to be decided. This was posted by the church. This is really sad news. I first came into contact with Doreen about twenty years ago when I was living in Hiroshima Prefecture. I used to write a Sumo Column (called the Teppo) for a monthly 'magazine' for the 100 or so JET teachers in the area. I wrote her an email with ten sumo questions, asking her to choose five to answer, to be printed in my column. She kindly answered all ten. It was my great pleasure to meet with her later in person.

apparently this silly new story of a robbery is the followup to that story I wondered how long it would take till the name of the heya would appear - and of course a low end tabloid is the one. The part time employee was a 71 year old man. Since after quitting sumo, Saito worked in the production line at the Gunma factory of the Maruha Nichiro fishing company and had no history of rule infractions. Of course the tabloid mentions that some related person believes that Saito had quit the heya to escape the routinely daily violence by Takanohana towards his deshi. http://www.nikkan-gendai.com/articles/view/newsx/227830/2 There was an upgrade of the story to Yukan Fuji now http://www.zakzak.co.jp/spo/news/180425/spo1804250005-n1.html Apparently it was him, Takaora, who shortly after his intai went to that tabloid, which published the story: Taka punched him up to 2 times a week, at least once a month. The tabloid then lost to Taka at court because they couldn't prove it - what this former deshi now tries to prove (apart from the greed for money) is still a mystery, but I expect more to come.

Former Osawa held a running class for kids. He had been a middle-distance runner for 5 years before he joined sumo, from high school to junior college, but now his special training includes shiko stamping, to have the kids firmly kick the ground while running. He now is a member of his town's regional revitalization cooperative. NHK local news page with video: http://www3.nhk.or.jp/sapporo-news/20180424/3854661.html

On home ground in Kasama, Kise trained with Chiyonokuni: 8-2, with a 3-2 start o o oo For the 2nd day in a row, Takayasu didn't step onto the dohyo for asa-geiko, due to his back pain: "No need to hurry." He was present - to please the fans in his home pref. http://www.jiji.com/jc/article?k=2018042500933&g=spo Hakuho is also not in a hurry - he wasn't on the dohyo either for keiko in Toride, but is preparing his body - for the Natsu basho, hopefully. http://www.tokyo-sports.co.jp/sports/sumou/990712/

Baruto had his 2nd tournament at the TBS Downtown Wednesday variety show - I had skipped the first one in December ( youtube-dl www.pandora.tv/view/sbs-tv/55643535/), there will be a 3rd. Sumo against a bunch of weirdo teams - with a total of up to his weight in the team, now 178kg, with wife and kid watching. In the end against 2 kids teams: The last middle school trio from apparently a freestyle wrestling club (hard to believe that to be still quite young kids) managed to get him out with a perfect team effort, which looked a legit win: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doR2cpd4mSs6t=12m38s - better: youtube-dl www.pandora.tv/view/sbs-tv/56012784 On another show this week youtube-dl www.pandora.tv/view/sbs-tv/56006028, Baruto talked about how he lost half of his retired money: to one introduced to him by his sister. That guy talked him into joining the car repair business - and disappeared after 6 months with 20 million yen. But now Baruto is gaining big money from the import of tuna from Croatia to Japan.

Mark Buckton is reporting on the Sumo Mailing List that the venerable Doreen Simmons has passed away. If anyone can confirm this, and post any arrangement information, it would be appreciated. Emmett
