After Day 1...

CODE
Rikishi         #         Yen
Asashoryu      24   1,320,000
Roho           19   1.045,000
Chiyotaikai    11     605,000
Toyonoshima     8     440,000
Tochiazuma      7     385,000
Miyabiyama      5     275,000
Kasuganishiki   4     220,000
Kisenosato      4     220,000
Iwakiyama       2     110,000
Kitazakura      2     110,000

The Yokozuna handled Tamanoshima and collected 24 kensho in his first bout of the basho.

Roho was the second big money-maker of shonichi after defeating shin-Ozeki Kotooshu, while Toyonoshima defeated kensho machine Takamisakari to take home the 8 envelopes placed on their bout.

After Day 14...

CODE
Rikishi         #         Yen
Asashoryu     195  10,725,000
Tochiazuma     92   5,060,000
Kotooshu       78   4,290,000
Hakuho         41   2,255,000
Ama            39   2,145,000
Takamisakari   37   2,035,000
Roho           36   1,980,000
Chiyotaikai    32   1,760,000
Kisenosato     23   1,265,000
Kokkai         21   1,155,000

The battle between Yokozuna Asashoryu and Shin-Ozeki Kotooshu drew a lot of sponser attention as 44 banners paraded around the dohyo. No wonder it took so long for the announcer to finish naming all of them. The 44 were the highest total of the basho so far, but fell 5 short of the record set during a bout between Asashoryu and Tochiazuma on Senshuraku of the Aki basho in 2005.

Speaking of Tochiazuma, the Yusho leader added 6 more to his overall total. He is now just 8 short of 100. If he takes down the Yokozuna on Senshuraku, he would become the first rikishi not named Asashoryu to surpass the century mark since he himself did it back during the Natsu basho of last year. And given that the matchup with Asa will likely draw as similarly large a number of kensho as Osh/Asa, Tochiazuma could end up with the highest non-Asashoryu kensho total since Kaio took home 158 in Kyushu 2004.

Yusho contender Hakuho picked up five envelopes after downing Tokitsuumi, while Roho picked up 4 and Kisenosato 2.

In other developments, Nikkan adjusted the totals of some of the leaders. Kotooshu had a single kensho added to his total, Takamisakari had 4 subtracted from his, while Chiyotaikai had four added to his. Nikkan has been known to make mistakes in their kensho counts, but they usually get around to correcting them eventually. This is probably an example of that.

Kisenasato's 2 added kenshos is probably an adjustment as well. How can he pick up any kenshos when he lost to yoshikaze today.

Two facts-968 kenshos in all this basho, a record.
Fact number 2- from this basho, a 50 kensho per bout limit was in actual effect, as the reading of sponsor names takes so long, that it reaches the jikan boundary time .

After Day 15...

CODE
Rikishi         #         Yen
Asashoryu     195  10,725,000
Tochiazuma    131   7,205,000
Kotooshu       78   4,290,000
Hakuho         61   3,355,000
Ama            39   2,145,000
Takamisakari   37   2,035,000
Roho           36   1,980,000
Chiyotaikai    32   1,760,000
Kisenosato     30   1,650,000
Kokkai         27   1,485,000

The Yusho deciding bout between Yokozuna Asashoryu and Ozeki Tochiazuma had 39 kensho placed on it, 5 less than the bout between Asa and Osh. Tochiazuma, of course, was the winner, giving him a total of 131 kensho on the basho. As I mentioned in the day 14 post, this is the highest total for anyone not named Asashoryu since Kaio's 158 in Kyushu 2004 and only the second time during that timeframe that someone other than Asa has won more than 100.

The bout between Hakuho and shin-Ozeki Kotooshu, which also had Yusho implications, saw 20 banners parade around the dohyo. The Sekiwake was victorious, giving him a total of 61 kensho, most of which came in two wins over Asa and Osh.

Rounding out the top ten, Kisenosato added 7 to his total with a win over Toyonoshima, while Kokkai polished off kensho-machine Takamisakari to pick up 6 more envelopes of his own.

In addition to the kensho earnings, Tochiazuma picks up 10,000,000yen for his Yusho win, while Hakuho, Hokutoriki and Tokitsuumi will receive 2,000,000yen each for their sansho wins.
