Hi all,

I have a question about a translation I saw.

Where do you live?
Anata wa doko ni sunde imasu ka?

I would have expected sumimasu instead of sundeimasu.
why is the 'te' form used here instead of the masu form?

Hello Sumofan...

The te-imasu/te-iru form is used to describe both current states and current actions (the equivalent of the present simple and present continuous in English respectively).

Doko ni sumimasu/sumu? This would actually mean: 'Where WILL you live'? The 'masu' and 'plain' verb forms are usually used for future actions.

Hope this helps.

Thanks that clarifies it.

Does this work for past tense as well? would you use
sundeimashita instead of sumimashita to indicated that once, you lived in a certain place? Or would that depend on the context of the discussion?
